Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

^ Agree with JonyBr,,,and actually I was quite awe struck untill I read the 'Retarded & Gay' part of it.

Why do you have to resort to such conceptions of the westeren culture when explaining a ligit issue ?

You'r no different then the very people you question ? may be,,,

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

I apologize for using inappropriate language, which I shouldn't have in the first place. However, I still believe that it sounds horrible when people mix the two languages. Urdu is a great language that we should all take pride in, rather than trying to show off by mixing it up with English and pretending as if we do not know the Urdu lanugage at all.

Honestly, it sounds horrible.

As a matter of fact, so far, Pakistanis are the only people I have come across who are ashamed of communicating in their native language.

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

Bechari Sadiyah keh kar khud phans gayee :D

I think I know who you're talking about. I didnt watch that perticaular episode myself, but It happens a lot, that these wannabee's (i think you can safely call them this) speak sometimes even tooti phooti english ke words just to impress someone maybe?

but for what, just speak your own Urdu, thats the best, until you come across some gora Brit, then show it off all you want.

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

Gizzy, all I did was express how I feel. Yes, I admit I was harsh and my choice of words was bad.

It's not about tooti phooti English alone. Honestly, why speak in English to begin with? We have our own languages to communicate in, so why resort to speaking in English when its not even necessary?

I find it very sad and weird when I see people on tv conversing in English. Sometimes I watch other cultural shows and they'd throw in a few words of English here and there, however, not as much as I see it happening in the Pakistani media.

Its alright Sadiyah.

The reason this happens in a society when there are too many ‘Extremes’ working alongside each other. The low class, Mid Class & the high class. There exist another class ‘the Elite class’.

This is perhaps 'One of their trivial way of suggesting that they don’t belong to the class where ‘English’ is still considered a “Angrezoun ki zubaan”
Hence a very confused society :elmo:

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

Raindance, all of our different classes seem to be resorting to conversing in English. If it's the elite, I could sort of understand as they seem to have developed some sort of complex. However, all of our different classes now are speaking in English.

I've been around people with whole bunch of different backgrounds. This includes lower, middle and upper class. I've never seen them converse in English amongst each other with the exception of throwing in a few words here and there.

Many of them even proudly admit that their English is not good, as English is not their native language. They don't seem to be shy or worried about it.

Thats an easy one !!!

If you look around us you will see lots of ‘Bollwood & Hindi soap influence’ seeping through into our daily lives.

In India ‘English’ is a medium language where this medium is used to communicate with each other along side ‘Hindi’ e.g when a Guju talks to a tamil they converse in ‘English’ not hindi because hindi is not spoken in both cultures. This becomes an important life line for India’s thickly diversified culture and lingos.

In Pakistan we don’t have such a problem but people like to foloow it any ways, keunka , its ‘Cool’ and achaa lagta hai, some time, some time,

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

I have always though that the true urdu language is disappearing... my urdu is bad but it sounds so nice when people speak 100% urdu and use proper urdu words.... I have picked up so many real urdu words from the news etc....

its worked opposite for me to... I once said its barishing outside!

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan…

Personally i beleive languages that lack the sceintific research r soon forgotton, take my first post, how many ppl here can truly translate those sentences into urdu? & since the science is accelerating at max the effects can be seen in decades rather than centuries.

So why did ppl actually started to think english is better & speaking in urdu is shameful for some? (if this is the case) the reason is abvious, since all the sceintific words r found in english & u have to use those to communicate, one who dosent, is taken as uneducated who is unfamiliar to science & technology,… the effect gradually shifted from being educated to classy etc.

Recently in worlds urdu conferense, one of the famous poet Ahmad Faraz mentioned another interesting point why Urdu is fading away. He said strong cultural heritage takes an important role for the languages to live & grow, urdu never had a culture in indo/pak. It came in existence bcos of the diffrences of hindu/muslim, it grew in some poets poetry or in the “Khotha’s” in india. That is not a culture. Furthermore, he questioned why small local languages r still alive as they were 50 years ago? & came back saying bcos they have their strong proud culture from centuries. He said Urdu was “imposed” on us as a “bridge” language, bcos pakistan have diffrent cultures & languages one global language was required to communicate, ppl now have realized if they need to move on in the world they need a better language bcos urdu is getting obsolete, as an alternative, they r slowly moving towards english. The reason why urdu is not completly wiped away is bcos most of the population is still uneducated & for them the bridge language is still urdu.

Khair some of the things were suggested to improve urdu, some ppl were still very bright about urdu’s future some werent, but even those who were confident about urdu’s future were actually talking about a “new” urdu which have the ability to evolve.

:bravo:

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

I beg to differ.

Yes, there are words that are now literally impossible to translate into Urdu. Nonetheless, it does not mean you start throwing in every random English word that you can think of that already has its counterpart in Urdu.

For instance...

banana - kela
apple - saib
chair - kursi
and the list goes on

Now there are words such as microwave, tv, radio, movie, etc. that do not have Urdu counterparts. So it will not look bad if someone uses the preceding words while conversing in Urdu.

However, it does sound ridiculous when says for instance, 'mujhay chair la do. mainay chair par beth kar movie watch karni hai'.

This sentence can easily be spoken in Urdu: 'mujhay kursi la do idhar. mai kursi par beth kar movie dekhoon gi'.

I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

People outside of Pakistan get desi channels because they want to hear their own language and watch their own programs. It doesn't sound too nice when you see people trying really hard to speak in another language.

Try watching a Chinese, French, Arabic, Italian, or any other cultural program. They would be speaking 95-98% of their language with a few words of English thrown here and there. Whereas, many Pakistani programs make a mess of both English and Urdu.

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan…

Let’s try. Shall we :stuck_out_tongue:
