Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

“Aik ba-na-na lain, phir shugar add karain, phir milk daalain”.

This is how I heard the guy talk on Nadia Khan’s show. He’s the one who shares recipes.

I’ve also heard people talk like this in other programs. edited
It would be very sad if people in Pakistan actually talk like this. edited

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan…

this is very much a colloquial way of conversation among the educated lot in pak.

Even I have to speak like that at times just so the person being addressed can understand “my urdu” :halo:

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan…

you have to be one of those BURGERS to grasp the concept of what I was saying

aab agar maiN kahooN:

aap nay apnay mazmoon kee takhlees maiN ishaaroN kinaayoN kaa sahaaraa lay kar jaan peda kar dee

then do you find any hard word which you did not understand?

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

Some people do it just to show off where others sometimes just don't know how to say a word in English/Urdu and they have to use the other language.

People who use the other language because they don't know how to say the word in one language, that's fine and understandable. But people who do it to just show off how "educated" and "better" they are, that is wrong.

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

Anwar bhai, throwing in a few words here in there sounds okay for the most part. However, when you can get the message across by saying:

"aik kela daalain, saath mai cheeni aur phir dhoodh add kar dain"

then why should you change it to

"aik ba-na-na add karain, phir shugar daalin, phir milk daalain"

Do you see the difference between the two?

Yeh dor achi hai...Is qism ka aik aur dhaaga khulna chaihye...:D

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan…

Shikra, I would understand if someone who has been born and raised abroad speaks Urdu like that. What bothers me is local Pakistanis mixing up Urdu and English together to look “cool”, but they end up looking like retards, no offence.

I’ve seen a few other programs where people have done the same. Honestly, it sounds so horrible. Besides, Urdu/Punjabi/etc. aren’t bad languages. I don’t see where the complex is coming from.

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

Anwar bhai, I understood your sentence. In fact, I'd be more impressed if someone gets the message across the way you did, rather than butchering both English and Urdu.

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

Yes. I am also talking about people living in Pakistan and yes, I have PTV prime and I know what you are talking about :D

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

Like what? what's wrong with that urdu?

Re: Is this how people speak Urdu/English in Pakistan...

Sara & phatima, there isn't much wrong with the way you two speak. However, it looks very odd when you see native Pakistanis speak Urdu as if they have never lived in Pakistan.

  1. Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever is one of the most severe human viral diseases. The causative agent, (CCHFV), is the type species of the genus Nairovirus in the Bunyaviridae family. The virus is transmitted to humans by the bite of Ixodid ticks (mostly of the Hyalomma genus)

  2. An asteroid or comets may hit earth some day, although NEO comets r no danger to us according to space sceintists.

  3. My Computer had a virus when i tryed to copy multimedia file from my PDA, the same file even worked in my cell phone.
