Is this guy for real?

The man breaks down every two and a half deliveries, is confused about his gender group, has the intellectual capacity comparable to that of a goat. Come to think of it, who am I kidding, he has all the right traits to become a Pakistan captain.

(Ehsan bhai please don’t merge this thread in the whole Pakistani crisis thing thread, instead make it one of those threads that doesn’t go down.)

Shoaib Akhtar eyes
Pakistan captaincy
Faisal Shariff in Colombo

With the crisis in Pakistan cricket deepening everyday, ace pace bowler Shoaib Akhtar has staked his claim for the captaincy of the team.

Speaking to rediff.com he said, “It [the captaincy] will come to me. I know that I am capable of being captain of the Pakistan team.”

He, however, stated he has no intention of “running for it”.

“Whenever the captaincy comes to me, in one year’s time or six months, I want to be in control of the team. I want to serve the country and make sure that I leave my name in the book of history forever.”

Having mellowed over the years, Akhtar said he does not want to merely be a great bowler or a selfish captain, but a great servant of the country.

“I will prove that I am a great leader of men when the time comes. Let us have a toss first then I will show whether I will bat first or bowl first. I don’t know right now,” he said.

Two years ago, Akhtar had, in an interview with rediff.com, called himself a wild horse.

“I’m not a wild horse anymore. I am wise now. I am a good boy. Those who know me as a person know that I am a simple guy. It is hard to promote myself as a good guy on the television or on paper. I just want to lead my life just by myself instead of running after newspapers and convincing them that I am a nice guy.”

Contending that the race with Brett Lee for the title of fastest bowler is over, Akhtar said he has already proved himself as the fastest in the world.

“I bowled the fastest ball against New Zealand in Pakistan and proved to everyone that I am the best. In 1999 I was the fastest bowler; Brett Lee was nowhere near my pace.”

He, however, hastened to add that he wants to be the greatest bowler and not the fastest, and wants to be remembered as a bowler who was known to have a clever head and a brave heart.

He described most of the greatest cricketers as “mad”. The reasoning being they don’t see situations and instead play their game with guts.

“When you are more than brave you are mad. Sir Viv Richards was mad when he went out to bat without wearing a helmet and hooked bowlers hurling the ball at 100 miles at him. But there is cleverness behind the madness.”

Despite the dismal performance in the Champions Trophy, Akhtar claimed that Pakistan is the most talented side in world cricket.

He pointed out that Pakistan played Australia on their home soil early this year at only half of their capability and still crushed them.

“I was in the right rhythm and I think we exposed the Australian batting that day.”

He further pointed towards a weak link in the Australian batting.

“If you get the top-order out early, then you get through the whole team. You can get them out for small totals.”

He argued that if Pakistan plays to its full potential it could “beat Australia anytime, any place”, adding “the Australians know that too”.

With a spate of cancelled tours to Pakistan, the average Pakistani cricketer seems to be struggling. Akhtar appealed to the cricket world and asked them to come to Pakistan to play the game.

“It is not good for the game. Pakistan is safe. I think that the people should come and help us out for the sake of the game not for the sake of the money or television rights. I think things will be much better in a couple of days time.”

With Waqar Younis reappointed captain for the Australian Test series, Akhtar might have to wait a while before his dream of leading the national side is realised.

Interesting, I still won’t trust shoaib. I don’t think he can lead the team he need to first lead himself.

I agree about PAK being the best and PAK can beat Aussies any where, any place, any time. I am sure PAK can do that. :k:

He always amuses me.. is he fickle minded ?

Shoaib being the captain, Sambrialian u should have posted that bit in the jokes section. :)

team ka choro pehlay apnay ko to fit kar..har doosray game mein injured hojata hey..He will be the first captain missing 80 percent of the matches heh

The reason he is acting like that is cuz he had great success with ball in Australia against the Aussies. I bet next time if the Aussies give him good thrashing he will keep quiet for a while.

My point exactly Q bhai!

I think Shobby needs to be brought back down to earth .

I back Shoaib's stake as skipper. He is a trier, the linch pin of the team, and the extra pressure may elevatec his game to another level.

Ehsan bhai thats true he got thrashed in Kenya but still he's flying high for some reason he thinks he still can lead the team. I personally don't want to see PAK lose the up coming test series with Aussies and thats why I won't be praying for shoaib to get thrashed all over :) but let me tell you if Shoaib performs well and due to his performance PAK wins the series or draws it he's going to hit the skys.

That is when he plays - Imagine the Plight of VICE CAPTAIN in that team.

If Shoaib is made captain I suggest there should be two more captains in the Team
1. Deputy Captain 2. Vice Captain.

Shoaib has a lot to learn before he becomes the Captain. Only one person should be given Captaincy (If Waqar is Sacked) and that is Yusuf Youhana.

Interesting suggestion my beloved Asif bhai!

I can't believe that I didn't think of Yousaf as a potential captain.

I think Yousaf should be the skipper and the Razzler the VC if Waqar is sacked.

I don't think Yousaf Youhana is even interested in being Captain, first of all it will not happen 2ndly I don't think anyone in the team will listen to him if he becomes captain. I would rather bring back Moin and let him lead.

This is again an attempt by media to present Shoiab Akhter as a Bad boy--Billy the Kid sort of character!!..

The whole interview give the impression that interviewer/writer is trying to portray Shoaib as over ambitious kinna guy... there is nothing wrong in being ambitious...all the great conqureors were over ambitious--it's all upto a person to set his goals and limits..if Shoaib think he is captain material--let him prove it..there is no point in exaggerating his statements--Mike tyson claimed that he will beat the hell out of Lennox Lewis--but we all saw how miserably he lost..but on the other hand--Lewis always say in his interview..he is the best ever boxer--and there are not many who disagree w/ him..I love Shoaib atitude..just like lewis---he beleives in himself..that's one rare quality!!

I don't buy all this crap.. by rediff.com..they are trying to push Shoaib in the mess created by others players in the team

Every single player in Cricket world know what kind of terror Shoaib Akhter is!!... if this guy is so confident..i think he deserve it!...How many people can bowl as fast as he can--i think he is the fastest bolwer of all time...he is good...and if he got thrashed recently..well every bowler get thrashed...WHat's the big deal...

Leave Shoaib alone!

Whats wrong with Shoaib being the captain?
Yeah, he has to get fit first and play consistently in all matches, not just on performance level but also fittness level.
He is the most destructive bowler I have ever seen only after Waqar Younis. He needs to worry about his place in the team then thinking about being the captain.
I think he has the right approach to lead the team if he gets a chance.
Who could have ever thought 10 years ago that Waqar Younis will ever lead the Pakistani team.
Younis is the same guy who used to wear gold chains, with a huge mustache and look at how disciplined he is now, he thanks Allah after every match.
So there is no point in loosing hope, Shoaib has changed much since he came in to play cricket. He is a much respectable bowler.
If he can get his form back he can be the best in the world.

:rotfl: <— first time am using this headache smiley. Shoaib man u lucky or what  :hehe:

He will be The First Captian .. Who Cant Play All Matches :D

Ditto. Off-the-field captiancy has long been the subject of consideration. Shoib can make it a reality :k:

Youhana cant be captain, I will withdraw all support for Pakistan if he is made skipper. :D
