Maa Samaan is a common term in Hindi. Why cant we use Bhai Samaan? Like if I say that Amjad is my Bhai Samaan, does not it imply that he is my friend who is like a brother to me.
What if you're not close to your brother or you don't like him?

It becomes 'slang' to some extent in Desi culture, when you talk about relationship between a man & woman. I mean if some desi girl says ' Falan mera yaar hai'. Its quite awkward.
Although, I observed woman /girls using this term quite often nowadays in a different way. e.g. Yaar tumhara assignment hogaya.. Nahin yaar!
