is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

like all in one, dost that you respect as a brother…

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

**there isn't such a thing in Urdu/Hindi...there is no concept of a brother being a friend...this is a relationship of respect/affection...

...however, we may create a term which will be an amalgamation of the two...like biraadar_dost, biraadar_dost, biraadar-e-Habeebii etc**

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

^:D that's too complicated, creating a term :p, it's like the person isn't your brother but it's a dost that you love but in your mind and to the rest of the world you must see him in a brotherly way for the sake of still wanting to be around him

bhai just does not do this issue justice, it should be as subtle as possible, ok kkf thanks for trying though

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

You can respect your friend as a friend. Why does it have to be like a brother?

For example, I don't have a brother so I don't know what that relationship should be like. I do have some male friends I respect a lot but to say I respect them like a brother would be incorrect as I don't know what that's like.

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

The closest such relationship I can think of -
the relationship between Danveer Karna and Duryodhana. After a while, one forgets if they were friends or brothers.

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

Yeh koi Maha Bharata ke kirdaar lag rahe hain? They were 'Mitr' to each other. Somehow I found 'Mitr' more than friend as we in Sindhi call near relatives 'Mitt' which is quite similar to Mitr.

So for me, Mitr is something more than a friend and like a near relative.

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

Vidur jee - aap theek kah rahey hais. They were not blood brothers. But Duryodhan considerd Karna his brother and friend. so when at least I visualize their relationship, to me they are 2-in-1 - brother + friend - which you so aptly desribed as Mitra.

As always, Vidura always knows best - so I will defer to the new Mahabharat ke kirdaar in the house!

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

in fact, now that you mention it, Duryodhan addresses Karna as Mitra in the movies I have seen.

Now, who gave you the title Vidura the wise? Send some commission this way, Mitra!

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

bandhu?

its like two men are "Bandh" ( tied) with each other. so you could be tied due to blood or due to friendship.
bandhu is used interchangeably for friend and brother both.

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

nah...it's just another word for brother and the tie you are talking about is more like brotherhood.

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

KKF isn't it the same as we say ' Bhai Bandh' or 'Azeez o aqaarib'

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

bhai dost

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

**bhai band yes but 'azeez o 'aqaarib is NOT.

bhai band = ek hii taraH ke logoN kaa giroh, homogenous group
'azeez o 'aqaarib = rishtedaar = relatives****

so, there is a difference in the meaning of those two words.**

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

So bhai band = brothers and cousins or its brothers and community?

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

bhai band is referred to a 'community' of similar type of people or their status. it has nothing to do with brothers or cousins. bhai band = apne jaise, ek jaise log

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

^ By this definition my brothers and cousins are not my community and similar to me. What is meant by apne jaise = ek jaise log

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

**may be i haven't been able to explain well enuf...sholly...lemme try one more time :)

a *bhai band* can be *ham_qaum, ham_mazhab, ham_ham_mansab, ham_rutba, ham_Khayaal, ham_Khaandaan* etc. :)**

Re: is there a word in urdu/hindi that means brother+dost?

^ Ok that makes things more clear. So You mean Bhai Band include my family (brothers, cousins, etc) neighbors, countrymen, people from same faith)... So its a very wide term and can be equalised with 'Sare Bhai bund Hazrat Adam ki aulad hain', whereas Azeez o aqaarib only covers near relatives.

I was of the view that Azeez o Aqaarib covers both relatives and friends (Azeez= loved one=friends; Aqaarib = Qareebi = Quraabat dari = Rishta Dari) and same with the Bhai Band (Bhai =brothers & cousins, Band= tied= connected through any relationship including friendship)
