When describing someone’s complexion, is sanvala lighter or darker than gandami, or are they the same?
Re: Is there a difference between sanvala and gandami?
there are two uses of words....
one when the 'saanwala/gandami' person is physically present and visible.... in this case...saanwala refer to a 'darker' tone compared to 'gandami' which is lighter than saanwala...
On the other hand...when the person is not present physically......tha saanwala is referred to as 'gandami' and 'gandami' referred to as 'fair'.....an example would be matrimonial ads in pakistan :D

HA! I can see that! Thanks for the clarification.

Hmmm “Gandami” sounds like army slang for tracer rounds and “Saanwala”… your guess is as good as mine. ![]()
Re: Is there a difference between sanvala and gandami?
Just politically correct'er versions of the same shades.
Re: Is there a difference between sanvala and gandami?
I`ve never even heard of the word gandami being used as skin tone...but yea I agree with Jay must be a politically correct way of saying sanwali.

Re: Is there a difference between sanvala and gandami?
Sanvala is usually used for a dark person. Gundumi is medium. Gundum is wheat so its wheat color.

I think Gandami is more like olive skin tone(like JLO's) and lighter than sanwala(mocha).
Re: Is there a difference between sanvala and gandami?
I've always thought that gandami is wheatish/olive and has more yellow undertones than a saanvli complexion.
Re: Is there a difference between sanvala and gandami?
these are all relative terms to describe the color of the skin...but, saNwlaa is darker than gandumii :)
Re: Is there a difference between sanvala and gandami?
I learn something new today ! I somehow always thought sanwala was 'fair'. You guys know that song by junaid jamshed? "sanwalee salonee see mehboba", I thought he admired for being so white because that's what Desis prefer.

saaNwli's are said yo have "namak" on their chehraa which is considered something desirable in a girl...:) namkeen chahre kii to baat hii kuchh aur hotii hai...saaNli hii namkeen bhii hotii hai :)

That was after he made song "Goray Rung Ka Zamama Kabhi Hoga Na Purana" to please darker colored girls. ;)
Yes, Gandumi is lighter than Sanwla color but not fair.
Fair is lighter then Gandumi but still not Gora.
So we have Kaala, Sawnla, Gandumi, Khilta Hua(fair) and Gora, One can use Doodhiya/Gulabi for gora since even Gora has different tones.
@KKF:
Namak or Namkeen has nothing to do with color, it has to do with attraction. A sanwli may or may not have namak (attractioon)
Re: Is there a difference between sanvala and gandami?
kitnii “saaNwali, salauniyoN” kaa tajrabaa hai aapko janaab-e-waalaa?

Re: Is there a difference between sanvala and gandami?
Isn't gandami used to refer to a wheatish skin tone? At least that's what comes to my mind when I hear the word xD
