Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

And does it result in your roza breaking? Please explain your POV using religious or cultural references.

And on the off-chance it is in fact a sin - how many of you suspect that your roza/fast is at risk of breaking?

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

You can't lie during your roza. Sarcasm takes a statement that is inherently false and adds a tone of voice to explain displeasure. But the statement is still in fact a lie.

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

I don't think it breaks your fast...just nullifies it.

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

sarcasm is kinda intolerance (in articulation at least) and intolerance goes opposite to the lesson Roza is meant to teach. So obviously whatever tests your patience and taqwa, and you fail to pass the test, makes your roza doubtful. Doesnt it?

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

But sarcasm doesn't necessitate a lie, it could be a cutting remark that is in fact truthful.

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

shouldn't it be a sin year round then?

is your thread sarcasm?

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

Yes sarcasm is only a sin if it fails to be funny or doesn't have the desired impact.

Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

"is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan?"

Pffft, in Alaska maybe. rolling eyes

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

And what is this desired impact?

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

To leave the listener scratching their head, until the Ramadan is over and they realize they have been mocked/slighted/pickyourownword.

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

If sarcasm contains lies, mock others without due justification or has a hint of back-biting etc. then, it is a sin regardless of the month of Ramadan. The fast gets nullified in such case too, in my views.

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

So to insult. And in turn a sin.

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

But if the listener realizes this after the fasting month is over, I think all the sarcastic savants are safe.

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

What if he or she realizes during ramzan? Then?

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

Then you've sinned. :D

Or polish your sarcastic jabs until they are refined enough to make sense only after serious pondering.

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

So it is a sin.

Sehrysh seems you lost this one. I was right :D

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

But then what do I know.

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

if your sarcasm hurts someone's feelings then it's a sin whether it's committed during Ramadhan or outside of Ramadhaan.

Re: Is sarcasm a sin in Ramadan/ramzan?

Sarcasm is rudeness year round and constitutes sin if we are to look at the verse "evey atoms weight of good you did you shall see it and every atoms weight of evil you did you shall see it" in Surah Zilzal.

Doing these things in Ramadan goes against the fast as well ... If done intentionally and no forgiveness is sought then this a sign of no active resistance against what is rude - i.e. it is open rudeness. When it appears in the form of a joke, it can be a different matter, but then in a joke, clarification should be given and apology sought to gesture the joke sentiment.

We are always doing sins that we are unaware of sometimes because we are unaware of the sin itself, but at other times the disliked act is so habitual we don't detect it when it is exhibited from our behaviour.

We can go through a fasting period withou knowing if they have been accepted, but we pray they are accepted. Seeking to avoid little things like sarcasm can help us demonstrate our intentions to purify our fasting and other acts of worship and gives us the ability to be sincere in our du'as.
