Is Punjab next?

Nawaz Sharif’s so-called principled stance does not extend to quitting the Punjab govt, which his party (at present) leads. But the PML N lacks a majority on it’s own, and relies on PPP support - from whom it has disassociated itself from at the center. Double standards by the Sharif biradran no doubt, but will the numbers game hold up for them, if the PPP eventually withdraws their Punjab ministers as well?

Required majority in Punjab Assembly = 186

PML (Nawaz) - 164
PPP - 106
PML Q - 86
Others - 8

So PML Nawaz is quite a way from a simple majority on it’s own, whilst the PPP could try to form it’s own govt with the support of the PML Q. Despite public denials of a PPP-PML Q alliance, privately meetings are being held between the two sides. Now we know why those PML Q “forward blocs” came to the fore

Re: Is Punjab next?

Hope situation doesn't get ugly.

Re: Is Punjab next?

Lol lol.....Reza... You have all the formulas and tricks to diss the Nawaz League.. We all know that they only got seats in the Punjab and now if they are going to fall off with the PPP , they have to loose their Punjab Government too.

Re: Is Punjab next?

Its no elaborate puzzle. The reason why Musharraf was asking Shujaat and his brother to resign from the PML[Q] or hand over the presidency to someone else was because he just cant get Zardari to work with them, or vice versa, so he can get the only party taking a stand for the restoration of the judiciary out of the way. And you are mistaken when you think forward blocs such as that of Nilofer Bukthiar were made to work with the PPP.

Assuming PML[N] cant retain a Government, neither can anyone else, with the large number of seats they have.

Re: Is Punjab next?

But it is interesting to see that Mr Principles Sharif does not want to foresake his Punjab jagir for the judges, don't you think? He can't work with the PPP at the centre, but dosen't mind their support in Punjab. Talk about hypocrisy.

There is now even talk of forward blocs within the PML N, splitting off and supporting a PPP-led move to form a govt in Punjab.

Re: Is Punjab next?

Why should NS quit Punjab?. He won Punjab and it is his right to form a government there. He can chose to substitue PPP for another party but he is giving PPP a chance to deliver.

Re: Is Punjab next?

Reza, lets see some proof. No one in the PML[N] is going to jump ships, with the present economic crisis, thanks to a decade of bad governance, it'll be political suicide for anyone to get on the people's bad books by supporting the dictator.

Re: Is Punjab next?

He did not win Punjab - in fact his party came second place in terms of actual votes, behind the PML Q. His party only won the singles largest number of seats.

The only other party he can substitute the PPP for is the PML Q.

Re: Is Punjab next?

From your own post:

PML (Nawaz) - 164
PPP - 106
PML Q - 86
Others - 8

Lets see now, if the PML[N] didnt win it, who did then? :hehe:

Re: Is Punjab next?

It will not. Nawaz Sharif cannot afford that, because if he resorts to violence he will lose people's support pretty fast.

Re: Is Punjab next?

Yes he did win Punjab. He got the highest number of seats in Punjab. Isn't that called winning?

PML Q minus Musharraf would feel much more comfortable with NS than Zardari.

Re: Is Punjab next?

reza, do you have any links to back the voting statistics you came up with? PML[Q] won more votes OVERALL, as in all over Pakistan (thansk to places like Baluchistan etc where prestuffing ballots was easy), but I dont think its true for Punjab alone.

Re: Is Punjab next?

That's what I said.

Now tell me can he govern Punjab without other parties like the PPP or PML Q? Not much of a "win" if he cannot govern Punjab without parties he either detests (PML Q) or has just broken away from in the centre (PPP).

If Nawaz is a man of principles, then his Punjab CM should sack the PPP ministers and then let's see if they can keep their govt going?

Re: Is Punjab next?

Thats what you call winning! PPP cannot govern with support of other parties as well.

He still wants to give Zardari the benefit of the doubt, in a couple of months if things don't change then thats what might happen.

Re: Is Punjab next?

I am still waiting for Reza's proof, as to who got the highest number of votes in Punjab.

Re: Is Punjab next?

Yes, and who said any party “won” the Feb 18 elections outright? No party did, except for the PPP in Sindh, which gained a simple outright majority there.

We have all what has been said, done (and not done) over the 3 months since the elections, so I would not bet on any great improvement in the situation politically.

Re: Is Punjab next?

Winning is getting the most seats compared to any other single party. If NS didn't win then why is the CM from PML N?

Re: Is Punjab next?

Bhai, that is because the PPP has provided support to the PML N.

You need 186 seats to form a majority govt in Punjab. The PML N has just 164.

Re: Is Punjab next?

Since you are a bit slow let me rephrase it, why did the PPP not form a government in Punjab if PML N did not win? PML N would have supported PPP.

Re: Is Punjab next?

Those are national assembly statistics, lets see the provincial assembly statistics… We are tlaking about a provincial govt here.
