Is Lahore a nice place to live?

I was just wondering how life in Lahore could compare to a city life in America. Not a huge city like New York City, but something like Salt Lake City, Utah. I’ve never been to Lahore, only read about it and looked at some pictures. From what I can tell, it is a very beautiful place and lots of very nice architecture. What kind of night life is there for Lahore. I know that Lahore is very populated, and I assume that there is a city life and a more relaxed setting…maybe in a rural part, but I am not sure. I have met a great guy from Lahore and we will be married soon, I am just debating on where I would like to live. He says he doesn’t care where I want to go, he will go just to be with me, but right now he is very successful in his business and life and I would not want to interrupt that. Could anyone just give me some pros and cons about living in Lahore, or just some fun facts? Thanks so much! =)

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

list down the most important things to you......which u need in order to live at a place.........

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

Well, I think cleanliness would be at the top of my list. I don't want to live somewhere where trash fills the streets. Some cities here are like that. I also like convenience.....I don't like to travel long periods of time to go to the grocery store or run a simple errand. I am not worried about work so much, I would have a job with my soon to be husband. I was also wondering about the different leisure activities, are there movie theaters, zoo's, parks, clubs, bars? Oh and also...how is the weather? Does Lahore have all four seasons? Also, approximately how long does each season last.

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

Cleanliness - Depends on which area of Lahore you choose.. Lots of diversity in terms of cleanliness...
Grocery Stores - Just around every corner of street
Movie Theaters - Yes (All varieties)
Zoo - Yes [Lahore Zoo & Lahore Safari Park (Much better)]
Parks - Yes (Lots and lots of parks in Lahore)
Clubs - Yes *
Bars - Yes *
Weather - All Four Seasons.. Summer is Extreme and temperature do reach more than 45 degrees, Autumn comes along with Winter & Winter is kind of Extreme Too (But never go below 1-2 degrees), Spring season is great and Lahore celebrates it as Jashn-e-Baharan with lots of flower exhibitions and fun.

  • Might need reference of someone because usually these are not accessible to general public.

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

Now when you say 45 degrees..is that celcius or farenheit? 45 degrees is pretty cold LOL. As far as snow wise, about how much snow do you receive? How many feet of snow are usually on the ground? Also, what is Jashn-e-Baharan? Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

Lahore Lahore Aey! :D

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

True!! Lahore lahore aye... lahore lahore aye!

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

i have lived in lahore for some 6/7 years and no other city in the world can be compared with Lahore. The one and only "Lahore lahore aye". I used to love it and still miss it some times but perhaps that love doesnt exist any more.

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

That's 45°C. The summers are often unbearable due to the heat, and unless you have money, you will be without electricity for much of the day (meaning no air-conditioner), due to the national deficits in the energy sector. The winter is not extreme, it is still pretty warm in the winter and you can walk around in a t-shirt during the day, but at night temperatures often drop to the single digits. It doesn't snow in Lahore.

If you were born and raised in the West, most likely you will not like living in Lahore. 80% of the Pakistanis that I've known who were born & raised in the West do not enjoy the life in Pakistan, regardless of the city. Pakistan is still a third world developing society, and compared to Western cities (even the smaller ones), Lahore lags behind in many fields, including infrastructure, health, and security.

Suburban Lahore is pretty clean (but expensive) and life is pretty good (considering that you are middle-/upper-class), but still not as good as the West. For most people who've lived there (such as myself), they would generally have a bias in favor of life in Lahore, because the home is where the heart is. Visit it at least a few times before you decide to live there. There are large super-markets and grocery stores, but also even more bazaars around the corner that sell the freshest of all foods (all organic).

You will find poverty in the city-center and noticeable people of wide income gaps on your daily commute almost anywhere in the city. You may see one person driving a convertible BMW on the road and in the next lane, a man with four kids on a motorbike. The security in the cities has also deteriorated quite a bit in the last five years. Corruption is nearly rampant. A lot of the youth and the younger generations in the middle-/upper-class are "Westernized" (or try to be) and they are saturated mostly in the suburbs, while the lower-classes (unfortunately) are the only ones majority-wise who still uphold traditional values. Lower-classes generally do not mingle with the upper ones, not even the middle ones, unless if they are performing services (i.e. no befriending between such groups). It can often be seen as a "class-based" society, in my opinion, and is becoming very materialistic.

There is a lot of historical architecture, shrines, tombs, forts, etc. found in many parts of the city. Because the society is still quite conservative, relatively, you will not find the same type of nightlife in Lahore (at least not in the same numbers), i.e. open nightclubs, strip clubs, bars on every street, etc. However, all these do exist but in fewer quantities and often not very open to the general public. There is a historical Red Light district called Heera Mandi (Diamond Market); you can research about that on your own because I won't delve in to it. Lahore is known for its food! You will find almost every kind of food in Lahore, whether it be in fancy restaurants or on the street (both are amazing). The Lahoris love eating out at night. You can easily find many American fast-food chains there as well (subway, mcd, boston pizza, etc).

Overall, I would much rather prefer living there (instead of Toronto) and the only thing that restricts me is my work and my marriage. Take a few trips and see for yourself. Good luck!

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

Lahore is nice place to live

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

Thank you so much for your detailed answer. It is so great to hear different peoples view. I real visit before I decide to move, but just wanted to get a feel for it before I visit. I am very excited to visit, it would be great to experience a different culture then that of my own. I try to open my mind to new things and make the best out of what I can. Thanks again. =)

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

If you are not pakistani, which i bet you aren;t, i'd suggest you not moving to pakistan. Sorry, but it's not a place for foreigners, plus all these nice ppl giving you a lot of info here, mostly don;t live in pakistan themselves, the ppl you meet in pakistan might disappoint you a lot.

Sorry, no discrimination and no offense.

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

I will partially agree with this statement. But Lahore is a city for all. From a beggar to a billionaire, the city houses them all. There are areas more posh than many in the US and than there is the underbelly of the city where you probably won't be going anyway.

Night life is limited to dining out and shopping only. Forget about clubs and all that.

About where you should settle, let that "great guy" decide it for you. Trust your love :)

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

wow! i would be love to and be interested in seeing at least the pics of those areas so plz post a few pics so we could get some ideas what you talking aboput :)

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

I am a patriotic person, but a realistic one. So believe me what I am saying. I have lived in the city you have just heard about :)

And it happens everywhere. No city is single-segmented, be it society or housing. I wish someone could post some pics of the brighter side of the city ... :)

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

Lahore is soooo much fun! I'll highly rec it.
It's a good city to live in...

Re: Is Lahore a nice place to live?

i do believe you...just wanted to see the pic to enjoy...okiz, lets wait N see if someone can post some pics from those 'better-than-USA' places of Lahore :)
