Another major contributor of the economy is the money sent from abroad by people like you.

Re: Is Karachi really modern?
Karachi has the largest industrial bases in the country but most of the industries are stealing direct tax here. Same is ture for Punjab and rest of the country.
But at least most Karachi seths and multinationals pay indirect taxes. But in other areas even they steal indirect taxes.
Multinationals are invovled in over-invoicing i.e., importing goods from their parents/principal at inflated cost thereby increasing their cost of sales to save direct income tax.
we need to diversify this
we just cannot rely on Karachi
hopefully Gwadar will solve this problem
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
^^ And that might be disastrous for Karachi; the focus will shift over to Gwadar, and Karachi will be left to rot (the taxes from Karachi - of course - will haul over to Gwadar). Think about Gwadar as another Islamabad, a well established city which eats up the taxes from other parts of the country. And if Karachi is fixed we won't really need Gwadar that much - it's an exploitation of Pakistan's beautiful environment. Every city needs to eat up its own taxes first, not the taxes from some other area. Mostar95 are you in Karachi? If you would even have a visit to Karachi it is quite evident that very few people pay their taxes properly.
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
I am Karachite by birth. But still only few people pay direct taxes - and those few people are salaried paid people!
If Gawadar can handle central asian trade, then it can generate its own share of taxes, otherwise it will take Karachi's trade. And being so far away from the the Punjab and other northern parts of the country, it will incur extra transportation cost for trade which only few traders like to absorb.
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
Do you think that everything you've listed doesn't go on in other parts of Pakistan?
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
Balouchistan has got very small consumers base. NWFP and Punjab are more close to Karachi as compared to Gawader.
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
if we compared Karachi from what it was 25 years back to now..,I htink that though Karachi has made progress in terms of roads industries service sector,
but years of neglect from every ethinic community has resulted in such detoriation.NO body has a sense of belonging towards Karachi.
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
NO body has a sense of belonging towards Karachi.
Well this is not the case.
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
karachi and modern ![]()
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
^^ I know that it sounds absurd, but from what other people told me (my nana and grandpa emigrated from India to Karachi), Karachi was more modern in the 1960s and '50s than it is right now.
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
Indeed Karachi was a great city under parsi management! They contributed a lot the city! It was a majority parsi city till 1947.
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
^^ Yes, I believe that in pre-partition times Karachi had a large Parsi community, and even in the years following partition. But I think it that it was because of the British rule that Karachi was stable in pre-partition times; things kept standing up on their pillars till the couple of decades following partition, since then I think we've just been in a downward spiral.
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
im definitely going to visit Karachi after all of retro's wishlist gets implemented ;)
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
I am looking at pictures of Karachi on Flickr. I don't see any lanes painted on the roads. How come?
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
Use googlemap!
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
^^ Google waalay bicharay to is "maadran" shehar kay chakkar main khud hee na kho ja ain. Even if someone has a map of Karachi it is almost useless since we have hours of jamming together on the roads in our modern city.. no wonder Karachiites are so social.
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
Well when I compare roads of Karachi with ones in London, they are really very very wide! But alas people have no driving sense and do not take care of others as they do in London. This is the main cacuse of traffic jams on Karachi roads.
Re: Is Karachi really modern?
^^ Okay, I haven't been to London. Anyway, Karachi's roads are big, but lack of driving sense and the reckless rallies are major causes of traffic jams- just as you said. I was watching this footage on Geo where Altaf bhai crowded millions of people onto the streets so they could hear his speech.. talk about a responsible leader eh (I mean as far as the camera showed, not an inch of roads was in sight, either buildings or people). We should be absolutely intolerant to "encroaching" protesters and for the love of God we should also get some strict traffic police.

karachi in some places has wider roads than London, but dont just look at the width of the roads, but number of miles of roads, how well lit they are, traffic signals, marked crossings, motorways and all.
sorry, we may make ourselves feel better by sayign karachi has wider roads than London but a comparison of roads in the two cities is laughable. karachi does not even come close.
