Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

By Izzat I mean the attitude of men towards women in their household in the subcontinent. The attitude that in its extreme causes stuff like honour killings, but amongst more civilized people obligates men to have a protective attitude towards the women in their homes.

a) Is this in your view a good quality to have in our culture?

b) Is this a cultural attitude belonging to the pre-modern age that will be lost as we progress?

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

if its that protective attitude which is suppressive, then it needed to be antiquated yesterday.

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

i agree, but I wonder if we dont lose something good while discarding the bad.

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

if you mean by honor killings and forced marriages etc. then yes it should've been long gone.

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

well yea, nobodys gonna defend honour killings and forced marriages here. im interested in seeing if theres any positive aspects of this feature of our culture and whether we think its going to get discarded wholesale (and not just the honour killings..)

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

hey man dont discard the good with the bad but do unbundle them and toss the bad

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

It is a good thing. Humans will do bad things if they know there won't be any consequences of their acts.

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

whats a good thing?

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

^Protective attitude and jealousy.

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

unreal icono

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

i think icono's signature ("Intiha Pasand NahiN, Bahaya Tu HaiN") is a good example of what i was talking about. i think my views are probably close to iconoclast's on this. values like hayaa, ghairat in our culture when not taken to an extreme are good i think.

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

You're complacent!

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

protective attitude is good within limits and how it mainfests itself in the family dynamics.

I fail to understand how jealousy is good.

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

Why does a man's "honor" lie in the sexual behaviour of the women in his household? Shouldn't he be doing something on his own?

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

one word..jahalat

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

So u mean it does not matter?

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

'izzat' means respect.

& is not going any where as long as strong self rspecting and just people are around.
we all know that culturally, it means the value attached to the family or personal 'repute' or 'credibility' of people in their words and deeds.
how dependable they are.

the trick is to balance this with each person's own specific condition in their specific life situations.

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

No it doesn't matter. The woman is responsible for her own behavior. Who are you to judge her?

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

ghairat samjhai nahiN ja sakti

Re: Is "Izzat" going to become antiquated

well i dunno what ghairat has to do with jealousy as you previously listed.

I can also not understand the ghairat that has different standards for guys versus girls.
