to want to carve a pumpkin around Halloween time?
will I be stepping outside the circle of my faith?
I just want to have fun…make a really silly face on a kaddu, carve it out and put a candle in it to make it light up at night…what’s the harm in that?

of course not…it’s for fun sake…you don’t have to believe in Halloween stuff. most Muslim kids do it for fun and to collect candies. it’s nice way to meet your extended neighbours.

So while you are at it, why not celebrate christmas and all that other stuff aswell? Hey it’s just for fun’s sake, you don’t have to believe in it, right?

don’t compare Halloween with Christmas please…no one goes to midnight mass on a Halloween night!

this how it starts. you set out to carve a cute face on a pumpkin. and before you know it you are worshiping the dead spirits and find yourself doing yoga and drinking pagan brews in the name of curing colds.

Both are pagan festivals.
You don’t have to participate in Mass to celebrate Christmas. Infact most people who celebrate Christmas don’t do that. Heck, even Atheist celebrate Christmas.
So, why the hypocrisy? Why is one pagan festival OK to celebrate for fun’s sake, but the other one isn’t?

I don’t mind having fun with pumpkin. But personally I don’t like my children going out for candy. I bring lot of candies home so when children come we usually pass them out.

My mamu and aunty had a massive falling out over the fact that she wanted to dress up her 6 year old in a witches outfit and he didn’t. He is more strict on religion etc..
Erm for me if it caused arguments with people esp any of my family members then I would not do it BUT things like Christmas tree or easter eggs and even pumpkin are all good for sake of kids having fun but whilst allowing them to have fun I would also teach them about what Islam says about such traditions so that they know its alright to get involved with gora activities just to feel involved in all the hungama but at the same time make sure to teach them about our own beliefs as well and the reasons why we don’t believe in the same holidays as the gorey have.
Thats how my parents taught us kids. We were allowed a Christmas tree and roast a turkey but on Christmas day dad would also sit us all down and tell us the Muslim version of Jesus Isa As. Then on easter and even Halloween dad made sure to tell us the whole story behind Halloween and after we knew the story we decided we did not want to dress up in things we didn’t believe in but still handed out treats to the kids on the streets and put up a pumpkin in the window to show that we were involved in the community and the gora logue really appreciated it and in turn wanted to learn about our eid holidays and it gave us a chance to teach them about our religion and beliefs. Its all about learning and accepting and being involved in your community even if you do not all believe in the same thing. Remember Allah made us all diff communities for a reason.
