Is it worth it?

Okay no rude comments or stupid jokes please. Do LA Weight loss, Jenny craig, weight watchers etc really work? Has anyone ever tried these or any other services?

I know what the good foods are and what the not-so-good foods are. I have basic knowledge about exercising (cardio gets rid of fat, crunches tighten abdominal muscles etc). I’m not shy in admitting my biggest problem is laziness (to go to teh gym) and lack of self-control.

What expectations shud one have if they decide to sign up for this? I don’t need some deep soul searching to realize that I gotta do something and how my habits, laziness and self-control are crossing into every aspect of my life.. A slight personal motivation is that I’m going to be spending an X amount of money, I better not waste it. I got some birthday money and I can’t think of any better way to spend it. I already waste too much on clothing and jewelry and unnecessary makeup, all my necessities are met thankfully.

So any advice/comments…

Re: Is it worth it?

Jenny Craig does apparently work, if you stick to it. It worked for Fergie!

Personally speaking, I find going to the gym much more beneficial. Most of the work has to come from you though. You have to watch what you eat, meaning eat healthy, and be consistent in going to the gym. If you will be getting some money, why not hire a personal trainer so that they can work with you and create a fitness program designed for all your target goals? Your goal shouldn't be just to lose weight, it should be to become healthier and stronger. Stronger does not mean muscular, it means fitter.

You are also very young. I really don't know if Jenny Craig or those types of programs are healthy for someone so young. Also, I don't know if they will work unless you are doing some form of exercise at the same time.

Shahreen will be able to advise you better.

Re: Is it worth it?

Well the counselor I spoke to at the center said that their plan can help you lose about 1.5 to 2 lbs per week, just on the food alone; meaning it won't make you lose so much so quickly that your skin can't catch up. I know there's no way to fix that sagging skin except with surgery.

Exercise, which I alrady do a bit of but not as much as I should, will definitely help. Also, I don't need to lose too much, so I don't think loose skin wud be a problem, I'm not sure about that though.

My frend is on the plan and I looked in the meal plan book they gave her, it's pretty decent stuff, stuff u can get anywhere. Only thingthat makes me a bit aprehensive is the amount of money. Also, he never mentioned my age. I think 20 is old enough though.

Re: Is it worth it?

It s all about willpower. if u lack it, you can try all the programms in the world but it will be useless :)

Re: Is it worth it?

jenny craig is expensive and i dont think it works . i like weight watchers better because it seems like u eat everything but in moderation. sounds like a healthy way of losing weight. u r suppose to lose 2-3 lbs per week ( its the healthy way of losing weight). anything faster than that is extremely risky for ur health as u can lose muscle fiber ( or something like that) in the faster weight loss process. stay away from sugary and oily desi food. cut ur carb intake into half.. like if u eat one roti make it half a roti instead. substitute fruits for ur sugary cravings. :D ( one of my major problem area.. hehe)
eat right, eat in moderation, have patience, excercise atleast 30 mins a day and u'll lose weight. good luck :-)
p.s: dont forget to drink water, lots n lots of it. and try to get proper sleep.

Re: Is it worth it?

I would have thought that the looseskin wouldn't be a problem, since you'r young so your skin is still able to tighten back up with toning exercises?

Re: Is it worth it?

^ Well loose skin wudn't be a probl wit me. From wat I know, it happens if u lose a lot in a short amt of time, like if u do the Atkins diet (wat my mtoher did) or gastric bypass. Thankfully, I don't have to go such a drastic route. However, I'm not sure if the loose skin depends on age or not.

Re: Is it worth it?

I wouldnt recommend any of those 'famous' diets out there. You have to find something that works for you only. You could begin by counting everything that you eat - replacing all your calories with whole food and observing yourself in the mirror - with honesty.

I used to measure the %age of carbs, protein and fats but now I just count the total calories making sure that I get plenty of protein. One thing that really helped me was to eat exactly the same things everyday in the same quantity - I still do that. If you dont think that this is 'extreme' try it. It makes life easy and saves money!

For exercise - find something you enjoy and just stick to it. Join a gym, workout at home, whatever - please remember that exercise should make you work hard to do it. Walking 20 minutes a day is no exercise - if you can talk while on a treadmill you are not working hard enough! Personally I dont do any cardio - I believe you can maintain a single digit body fat with eating right and anaerobic exerises like weight training.

Re: Is it worth it?

Viper, everything I've ever read about exercise and stuff, touts the importance and benefits of cardio exercise. Weight training is good for developing muscles, like a six-pack, but not losing fat, i.e., taking off the layer of fat covering that six-pack. Also, I've heard u gotta change it up once in a while coz it becomes ineffective if ur body gets used to a particular exercise.

Also, those centers, aren't really special diets. They jsut tell you what's better to eat, how much of it to eat, what healthy stuff is available here and there. There's no special food to buy, I think just some energy bars n vitamin pills to help keep the skins elasticity.

Re: Is it worth it?

Yes all those readings do and no doubt cardio is good but my personal obsevations and results just dont confirm that. The conventional treadmill hasent helped people as much as they would have liked (some folks I know go for 2-2.5 hours straight). As incredible as that feat is they dont really look all that different. Taking of the layer of fat is your diet - every last calorie you eat matters.

Sometimes I would lift only 65-70% of my 1-RM on exercises and reduce the amount of time between sets to only 30 seconds - that gives one hell of a cardio anything which is much more intense than a treadmill may ever provide (this method is based on Robert Thoburn's ideas and is no way my own). As much as I would like to 'get used' to it I have not really.

Changing it up is fine - even if you dont you wont stop seeing results all the literature that might say it may(and I have read a lot of literature) I just dont see what they claim. Weight Training for me is a means to look good - all the benefits of a low body fat Ill take them. Please dont believe all the myth and hype associated with weight training/pumping weights. Its not going to make you unflexible, reduce libido, make chics look like guys or god knows what I have read in some places.

I think most important thing is exercise here. Give pumping weights a try - an honest shot - see what it can do for you - the best thing is there is no peak to it - you can always improve on some part of your body.

As for being 'extreme' or 'self-involved' as people might claim you may become - thats's just a state of mind.

I was very surprised by your last sentence :
"There's no special food to buy, I think just some energy bars n vitamin pills to help keep the skins elasticity."

Energy bars are not food. Vitamins keeping skin elasiticity - I have never heard of that.
Stick to whole foods - in their natural state. This will automatically cut out a very large group of foods and most people are not ready to do this - I hope you will.

Re: Is it worth it?

there's a sayig i remind many of my friends who come to workout at my gym ---
"killer AB's are made in the kitchen, not in the gym"
if you wanna have washboard Abs and an incredible body, the very first thing you need to do is to keep a tab on what goes into your mouth. only once when you keep a check on that will your workouts and exercises yield its true benefits.

Re: Is it worth it?

Na i wouldnt do it.. i paid like 300$ for a summer membership at a gym, unlimited classes and all but i hardly went .. anywayz i'd just go out running everyday for 30 minutes.. or buy a treadmill. They are just gonna tell u the stuff that you may already know.. but whatever floats your boat :D

Re: Is it worth it?

Sara: I am going to let you in on a secret but I don't know how seriously you are going to take it. Since, you have created an image of me in your head based on your own opinions.

Anyhow, I don't know about all those places but I do know a few key things that will make you not only loose weight but also help you maintain it.

  1. Watch your proportions (serving sizes)
  2. Add more vegetables, fruits and whole grain products.
  3. Eat complex carbs and eliminate all bakery goods, fried foods, etc.
  4. Don't deprive yourself because if you do that you are actually going to end up eating more
  5. Definitely exercise and start off with 15 minutes and keep adding 5 minutes everyday onwards
  6. And from our desi stuff keep an eye on the quantity of rice, potatoes, and rotis you consume. Also, switch white bread to whole wheat.
  7. Most importantly drink lots and lots of water. Instead of juices eat real fruits since they tend to have less sugars and calories.
  8. okay and now here goes the secret drink a cup of green tea after every meal. It helps with digestion and trust me you will see a big difference.

Once you have done all the above, I can guarantee, you will see a big difference in 2 weeks.

Re: Is it worth it?

Sara I've seen your pictures here at Guspshup dont really think you need to loose weight you look cute the way you are.. :) but if you are determined to loose couple of pounds i wouldn't waste my money on such memberships instead just eat right and exercise...about 3 years ago i was like you wanted to loose some weight and i use to lock my room and put on some music and just dance... :D i loved it :)

Good LUck :)

Re: Is it worth it?

Do you have ballys in your area? If you dont then this will be useless, but if you do you can join for like a month. They garuntee results, they have personal trainers work with u n everything. And its like 19-30 bucks a month(depending on their promotions) and if you dont see results in a month, they refund your money back. And even if they dont refund it, thats not a bad price to pay at all!!!! Just make sure you dont sign a contract before your 30 days are over. Its not bad to try at all!

Re: Is it worth it?

Tikhi, thanks. Bally’s isn’t really convenient for me though, since there’s none closeby my school (which is where i am the majority of the week). Also I use the school gym, but my card is about to expire so I’m not sure, I’ll think about it

roshi, thanks that’s so sweet of u to say! but i didnt post to ask if I shud lose weight, I already know what I’m gonna do. I jsut want to know the drawbacks of joining that type of program.

Mahru, that’s nothign new, I knew all that before but thanks anyway  Ill c about the green tea, my mom uses it too. she said it doesnt really make you “slim” but errr acts as a laxative

naved, honestly my standards aren’t as high as the average person. i’m not obsessed with having six-pack abs, just lose some of my stomach, but yeah I know food makes a BIG difference.

Re: Is it worth it?

Personally I don't like gyms, just try a small change, like go jogging everyday. Try it for a few months, it will definitely make you loose weight. It's raining like crazy and I am about to go :D

Re: Is it worth it?

^ Eh not an outdoorsy person. Went to the gym today, was sweating and ill be aching like nothing tomorrow that i wont be able to go downstairs without going “ow ow ow ow!” and it’ll feel great

Hey TJ, I’ve haerd Bally’s is a scam. Do you go there currently or you ust use the wbsite? And anyone else who goes here , advice wud be appreciated :k:
