I read this strange article & thought I’d share it with you guys, dont know if its a hoax or real. Can anyone inquire if its true. People with Dell laptops, please check if its real or a hoax.
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
Baray miaan kiun aap hamein unn batoun se daratay hain jinn pe hamara koi ikhtiar nahi :(
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
interesting find... i always wondered if even M$ has some backdoor to all windows systems. As much unethical this is, it doesn't surprise me.. especially after they renewed the PATRIOT ACT recently.
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
very intresting and I wouldnt be suprised. Also have a look at the echlon system run by USA, UK, Australia and maybe one or two other countries.
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
Having a better look at that keylogger to me it looks like a hoax. I dont think it's a commercial piece of hardware. Maybe someone with the same laptop can confirm this.
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
its a hoax...those pictures were actually taken from the people who did review of KEYGHOST....those are not real pictures 4 sure! Its pure B.S i got 5 of those keyloggers laying around here.
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
i would say hoax.. dell worked their butts off to gain industry's shares.. doing this will put them in situation I dont think would be smart to begin with.. its MORE than a risk-factor..
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
Its true thats how it is.... Take for example the encryption if the big brother can't break it it won't approve for general public use. We make devices where there is a back door for CIA it has been part of the desigh... We make communication devices....
Be careful..

Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
it made it to Engadget … hmmmm … now wait for all the blogs to fire debates on this; should be a good one… All geeks r gonna open their dell laptops n dig on it
the answer to the initial question of being watched would be yes; if not by this keylogger, then through our ISPs for sure ( on some keywords )
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
shouldn't be difficult.. anyone with a Dell laptop volunteer?
endgadgets counter arguments aren't convincing enough.. it could be a hoax, but not for the reasons they have cited..
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
I'm working with a major North American corporation for the last 7 years. We are in 100% Dell environment. I know Dell is working on something that will help corporations and businesses trace down missing/stolen laptops. This will ofcourse be with co-operation of government and other private agencies. I attending our World IT conference in Vancouver a few month back and we even had a discussion session on this topic.
Whatever they will be enabling the purchaser/owner of the machine will know and that will not be a hidden item.
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
all I know that your ISP knows everything about you and they are legally obliged to provide that info to big brothers, nom sain
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
Todd, ISP doesn't know everything, but they know where the emails are coming from into ur mailbox & vice versa. Or if tracker is put on they can see what websited u have been visiting.
In some case they can trace ur activity on NNTP servers too. The reason warez vanashing on IRC is that its traceable too.
But all the activity is only traced if a person is pin-pointed. ISP's dont trace anything unless they are told by the government about a particular person/mailbox or told to trace what is happening from a particular IP.
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
Ya ISP do keep records of what IP is connected to what modem or in case of dialup what user ID.
For example take pakistan, u buy 10 rupees ID card the only thing that is traceable is ur phone number. How can u be traced if u are using a net-cafe in Pakistan ?
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
if we r not getting watched as of now, we will be… pretty soon

Several computer hardware and software manufacturers, including AMD, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Microsoft and Sun, have gotten together and created a chip that will be built into computers that will, for all intents and purposes, broadcast a unique identifier that anyone will be able to read when you access the Internet.
As the joke goes, on the Internet nobody knows you’re a dog. But although anonymity has been part of Internet culture since the first browser, it’s also a major obstacle to making the Web a safe place to conduct business: Internet fraud and identity theft cost consumers and merchants several billion dollars last year. And many of the other more troubling aspects of the Internet, from spam emails to sexual predators, also have their roots in the ease of masking one’s identity in the online world.
Change, however, is on the way. Already over 20 million PCs worldwide are equipped with a tiny security chip called the Trusted Platform Module, although it is as yet rarely activated. But once merchants and other online services begin to use it, the TPM will do something never before seen on the Internet: provide virtually fool-proof verification that you are who you say you are.

Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
nothing is fool proof. TCP/IP is not a secure platform. regardless of what hardware is installed you can sppof the packets.
In UK ISP's are required to keep connection logs. There is a white papaer to keep traffic sent as a backup for a set amount of time I think at the moment 6 months. This will cost ISP's dear as they will have a legal obligation to keep data secure. A lot oframbling and I hope it never happens but thats what is more likely to happen.
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
Najim, when you have time on your hand try reading "Spy Among Us" perhaps that should make some concepts of "keeping an eye" visibly clear for you. Two easy ways to monitor someone's activity is 1) by phone and 2) internet regardless of location.
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
All printers already have an identifiable code - so when you buy a printer, they know exactly who brought it etc - and then if they catch somthing dogy written on it. KAPOW> you goin down biotches.
PS: did baby bush not recently (like 2 days ago) admit to giving permission for the emails and telephone calls etc of all citizens to be moniters for the sake of safety etc fight against terror blah blah.
Re: Is it real? Are we all watched/sniffed?
im being sniffed all the time, but i dont mind
