Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?
Okay, so you wouldnt want to give your kids, any of the names of the Prophet(sas) or any of the Companions (rah)'s names, other than Salman, or any of the the names of Allah which are in the format: (Abdul …)
Impressive!
Bhaloo Shah…as far as I remember the Prophet and almost all of his Companions were Khaleeji Arabs. So YES, in order to be a Muslim, you have to emulate a Khaleeji Arab.

So why don't you discard your heathen language and adopt Arabic? Why not start taking sides in Arabic arguments? Why don't you become a self-hating Pakistani and start claiming Arab ancestry? Why not starting wearing the distasha then?
If that was the case, Islam wouldn't have prospered in the early years.
But then again, the inferiority complex many Pakistanis have is what's driving them to cultural genocide.
BTW, Persians and Turks have done more to spread Islam than the Arabs have.
If it were up to people like yourself, Sufism would cease to exist.

Do you actually think before you right? What does speaking in Arabic, taking sides in Arabic arguments (whatever that's supposed to mean!!) and wearing a thawb have to do with hating Pakistani culture?
Iam pretty sure you wear something other than, dhoti/kurta or a shalwaar a kameez or a sherwani....and I see you talking in english.

Let me remind you once again, The Prophet was an arab, his Companions were Arabs...if it werent for them, you'd still be bowing to monkey.
So before you go ahead and hate an entire nation, just think for a minute...who all get included in your hate-list.

The irony coming from you, isn't it? Silly fob.

Let me remind you once again, Islam is NOT an Arab religion.

Jesus spoke Aramaic, should all Christians start discarding their languages and start speaking Aramaic, by that logic?

bullehshah is not worth any attention, every post I have read by him has been idiotic. The guy is high on hashish from his local dargah.
As I understood it, a Muslim name must have a good meaning. No other requirement that I'm aware of. So since we live in the USA we gave our kids names that have very nice meanings and they are western names. It will make their life here easier for them.
I agree with the first bit.
I disagree with the second, cultures need to evolve and adapt, even most presentday Western names have foreign origins (Middle-Eastern/Biblical)...
Whilst it's fine to have Western names (in Pak or here) they shouldn't be the only names we use, sometimes it's better to use the eastern equivalent e.g. to me Ibrahim sounds better and less stodgy than Abraham, we'll always be Pakis no matter what and those who are going to give us a hard time will do so regardless of our names. Obviously it's sensible to pick eastern names which can be easily pronounced if one is living in the west "'Ali, Jamal, Jameel, Zaki etc."
I personally like Koranic/Biblical names because they are bi-cultural.
Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?
Aren't we, as Muslims, advised to not follow the non-believers' example? Some people westernise the name Mohammed to 'Mo,' I have been led to believe that this is an example of distorting the Prophet's name and should not be done.
It's a sad day that our people have to take western names just to fit in. It seems to be following in the example of American Jews who changed their names decades ago to names not easily identifiable as being Jewish in origin. An example would be Stan Lieber, who became Stan Lee.
This is also a trend that the Indian community has been partaking in for a while now, I've met a couple of Peter Singhs. You also come across Chinese people with western names but they often are Christians.
You may want to name your children so they fit in with western kids, but then believe me kids with traditional Muslim names will look at your children like they stand out, they will still be 'outsiders' in one sense or another.
Most of the asian people I know have grown up with Muslim, Sikh, Hindu names and don't seem to have suffered from any permanent emotional scarring.
The reasons given all seem to be a way to make your kids sound white.
Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?
traditional muslim names are arabic names because the early muslims were arabs, there are many non muslims who had the same names, and to this day there are many non muslims who have arabic names i.e. the former iraqi leader tariq aziz.
There is no requirement for anyone to name their kid with an arabic name, there are many people in iran and turkey who have turkish and persian names and they are fine with that.

good point, he was baptised as michael yohanna, but he chose the name tariq aziz, and has been using it for ages, and did not change his faith from what is known. That is just one eample, u can add nams like hannan ashrawi, nayef hawetmeh, kamal salibi, or naim ateek of sabeel are some more eamples.
if you look back at major christian thelogists from teh arab world even centures ago, they had arab names. I think I posted that on this site a few years ago as well.
