Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

whats wrong with Akbari or Asgari?

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

Sara is a universal name, as is Nadia.. I know pakistanis, russians, albanians, goray, etc with those names.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

What about David in place Daud, or Joseph in place of Yusef? Same name different sound.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

no its not okay.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

As I understood it, a Muslim name must have a good meaning. No other requirement that I'm aware of. So since we live in the USA we gave our kids names that have very nice meanings and they are western names. It will make their life here easier for them.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

but why give them goray names to make life easier it is like hiding ur identity for who u really are. if ur muslim be proud of it n ur name.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

Kind of like converts or Arab-wannbe Paki-Salafis who adopt Arabic names to hide their culture?

An inferiority complex perhaps?

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

Absolutely. The only requirement of a "muslim" name is that it have a good meaning. There are many names in Pakistan that are not Arabic names but that doesn't mean that they are not appropriate names for a muslim. By the same argument, an english, french, or any other name is perfectly acceptable unless it has a negative meaning.

How is it hiding one's culture or identity when one is born and raised here?

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

My boys in no way hide their cultural background or identity...they talk about Eid, sing Eid songs at holiday time and have a distinctive last name. However, the name they are called each and every dayby their peers is a very important thing, one which should not be so unique that it stands out like a sore thumb. When you go to a school of 1000 students and they're all named Sue, sam, adam, becky etc etc and you are the ONLY Abdullah or Muhammad then guess what? You're going to get picked on MERCILESSLY. So we decided that since we have "western" sons, they will have western names. And I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

I've met a Pakistani girl that was named Roxana and another one that was named Helena. They were both Shi'as actually lol

I'd rather give my children Farsi names than Arabic names.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

Mama, I grew up and studied in a Muslim country, which by definition should be a country which raises the most violent and abusive children in schools and the US should have the most tolerant and enlightened children...

In my life, I have been to 12 different schools because of the nature of my father's job...

However, in Pakistani schools, no one taunts or picks on anyone while bullying and picking on is rampant to the point of abuse in the US...

Why is that?

Yeah right, bullying is constant if you're a Shi'a, Ahmadi, Christian, or Hindu as the victim.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

As far as there is no kufar in the name, it is ok to give your child any name from any language, country, or religion.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

I don't think there's such a thing as a "muslim name"

A "muslim name" is a name with a good meaning... So as long as the name you have in mind has a good meaning I think it should be OK.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

You can name then anything you like. Just make sure its not something that could be easily picked on.

For exampe i have a 3 yr old cousin by the name of Anas (pronounced un-us). We all know it is a very beautiful name in urdu/farsi but you can imagine how growing up in new york will be for him.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

Not even then...

It's a matter of repeating a lie until you believe it yourself...The truth, obviously, is always something else...

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

One of my cousins named his daughter Anushka, which is a Russian name and means "little angle". A lot of Russian Muslims use that name as well, so I don't see anything wrong in a Pakistani family using it too.

Re: Is it okay if you give ur child a english name: though u are a muslim/pakistiani?

Apparently you have to emulate EVERYTHING Khaleeji Arabs do in order to be a proper Muslim
