I disagree, like someone else said everything evolves with time and over time political identities develop into true national ones, that’s what happened with Britian or take the fact that Iranians and Vedic Indians were once one but now they are very distinct. Same way Pakistan may have shared a part of it’s heritage with Afghanistan-Iran and a part with India but it has now developed a culture of it’s own now (let’s not live in the past).. Some may argue 60 years is very little time for a culture to develop but again I wuld disagree, Pakistan has it’s own flavour distinct from India and Afghanistan yet you can feel it from Karachi to Kashmir.

Everyone thinks of us as Pakistani, nobody looks at if we’re Pukhtun or Punjabi or Persian, it’s only the nationality which is relevant in this day and age, petty little ethnic identities are bound to become extinct anyway unless they are made into national identities (but I can’t see that happening with Punjabi or Pukhtu).

In this country there is a lot of unity amongst Pakistanis, people from Lahore are closer to people from Peshawar than to people from Amristar, of course we joke around with each other calling names like “hot headed”, “dallkhor”, “naswarkhor”, “baygherat” but at the end of the day we know being one is in all of ours interest and there’s no deep rooted enmity amongst us, if ever there’s a fight the Paki community is always united against Gujaratis, Hindus, Bengalis, Assylum seekers etc.

Sal35, although, you are so harsh with us the people of North West Frontier Province, I appreciate your feelings and opinion. You are more truthful, objective, and rational than the rest of the guys having responded to your post.

Moreover, Prince of Persia doesn't know Pashto. I am sure he doesn't know Dari either. He says he is not an inhabitant of NWFP.

We people of NWFP never harbored any grudge against Indians because we never felt threatened by them. The hostility towards Indians is fanned by Urdu-speakers of Karachi and Punjaibis of Punjab not out any religious conviction or sense of a distinct cultural identity but economic motives. The day they loose their economic and political position in Pakistan, they will throw their Muslim and Pakistani patriotism away.

Prince, you cannot point me a single instance where political identity evolved into cultural one. Nations cannot be created artificially. Evolution is a very slow and gradual process that occurs over centuries in an environment of relative political and economic stability. You cannot compare Pakistan with Britian and America (which are true democracies and are immensely prosperous).

Even Britian, despite all its might and representative political system, couldn't put an end to ancient identities. By 2020, Scotland will be a separate country.

Pakistan is a country without a representative constitution yet. It has no uniform culture or ethnicity. In the sense of culture, ethnicity, language, and history-even geography, it is not a nation. It is at best a political union between various nations.

You cannot call my ethnicity petty. Think before you talk.

I am sorry for my outburst. I do apologize if I have created any misunderstandings. I consider all Pakistanis including people of NWFP as brothers except these guys who create a rift. When this guy gave me a HINDU label then I lost control. I am a hundred percent muslim and nothing less.
