“Destroy their country from within”. That’s the point. If it can’t sell its oil to anyone and if any dealing with its central bank are made illegal then it will destroy the country.
If Iran has no hopes of survival anyway then closing of strait will become an attractive choice.
Iran has not said that it will close the strait NOW.

It would be dumb to think that one can choke someone to death and yet the other person would keep smiling.

Why are you bringing Saudis into this?

Didn’t iran try its luck there in the eighties with the tanker war? Sure, Iran might have more ships in the region than the US, but the US navy packs more punch even now with its advanced destroyers and frigates and missile and air power. The only game changer would be if Iran had nukes which they don’t right now. Asymmetric warfare would have ideally worked if american was in iraq but they have withdrawn from there. Sure, iran could try something in afghanistan but there influence in iraq was more. US might be bruised but it will keep the strait opened along with other NATO allies.
