Is India A Secular Nation?

Deat Members, Feel free to give ur valuable opinion.

Re: Is India A Secular Nation?

On paper it is... Not sure about practice.

Well thats why this thread is created. U plz let me know what makes U doubt India's secular credentials? Maybe this discussion removes my illusions that India is a secular democracy, or vice versa. :)

Peace,

This is just a taste of what 'secularism' is all about in India!

Ideally secularism is separation of state and religion.

Union law minister H R Bhardwaj , "Lord Ram is an integral part of Indian culture and ethos and cannot be a subject matter of litigation in court... We have equal faith in Ram or Shiva".

Same article says..........

Indian secularism is not irreligious.

(Times of India editorial if you believe TOI)

Well brother, before I respond to ur informative post, plz provide the link to ur source of Information. I believe in TOI as a impartial newspaper. But I cant believe that whatever they or any media in the world says has to be the truth. After all newspapers are edited by human prone to do mistake.

And plz be honest, do u really feel that any such fraction of statement which U produced cast shadow on Secular Image of India? Home to almost 1/6 of world's population.

Waiting for the link, so that I can respond.

Peace.

Re: Is India A Secular Nation?

Raj

I am getting back on this board after a long time.

India is a secular democracy. No doubt!

1) There is no official religion for the country.

However do you call it truly secular like the west, I would say no. Because, there are different set of laws governing different religious groups, esp on personal affairs. Hindus are governed by Hindu Law and Muslims are governed by the Muslim Law. So, in terms of government policies, things are secular, but when justice and law comes into picture it is religious.

Welcome back Victory.

I consider that icing on the cake of Indian secular democracy. But it hurts when even muslims ignore the fact that India is the only country in the world which offer this space to its minorities, ie, allowing them to be governed by their personal laws. I hope this discussion help them remove their misconceptin about secular India.

India and secular, yeah right!! And I am Tom CruiJe..!

Hahahahahaha, good joke brother, but it should have been posted in appropriate section of this forum. If U dont know let me tell U that this forum has a joke section too for all this funny lines that U posted here. Hope U dont miss next time.

Peace.

This whole thread belongs in Jokes, thanks....

No brother, I m afraid that U are balantly wrong. It is all about serious discussion. I think that U dont have any knowledge about topic at hand thats why U consider it a joke. But its not binding on U to participate in this discussion. If U cant contribute anything to this thread than U can stay away from it, but U are more than welcome to share ur views if U have some on this topic.

So far there has been enormous contribution to the subject at hand which obviously belongs in Jokes.. Please move for max. impact. gooood luck.....

Personally i don’t think it’s a pure secular state.

But then again not all secualr states are that succesfull anyway. If India is as liberal as brother Raj_ind says then why don’t in some areas Hindu’s allow for muslims to slaughter cattle? This is a state law wich forbids cow slaughter even in some muslim majority areas.
Then again i could be wrong and some of these crackdowns could have changed since i was last there.

One question you must ask yourselves though dear brothers is that is secularism a good thing?:halo:

Like democracy it can be a double edged sword. How? Well we all know how good democracy is don’t we?

Actually it’s founders were slaughtered and the truth of democracy lost to flagrant imperialism. These same so called western secularism lovers will soon see how they fall apart when someone farts during a religous or cultural parade or something.:p:D

Funny how these so called secular countries crack down on civil liberties in the name of common good? Yet they cannot name what the term means.

I think you should be free to believe what you will, just keep it to your patch of land and not enforce it on others if they don’t want it. If others willingly be part of you or vice vera then fine…

Peace to you all.

I think the bigger question is - should India be a secular state ?

Re: Is India A Secular Nation?

India may have formed in the spirit of secularism but it is not secular nation in practice.

Re: Is India A Secular Nation?

^^ India is more secular than any other country in the world. Again it is not perfect in it but not doing bad.

Re: Is India A Secular Nation?

How can it be considered secular when peole like Modi are made chief ministers in India. When parties like BJP get landslide victories.

This is exactly I was expecting from the thread starter too. But it did come anyway.

The apologetic, defensive, misleading and cunning response.

**
**No one is asking for or talking about perfectness
but these kind of responses give the person a false sense of security. Oh! I know, no one will be able to dispute what I said since no one can come forward and say Yeah we want and expect perfectness from you. **

Old tactics to dodge the issue.
**
Be an honest person and admit **there is no such thing as secular India **except on a piece of paper or in some parts of ' media'. That's a true spirit.

Keep believing it is more secular than any other country. After all so many people on this earth believe on myths/mythology.

Lets assume: I provide you a link and it is a reality what I posted based on the link.

1-What are you going to do with that? or

2-what are you going to do then?

3-And what is this got to do with 1/6th or whatever world's population?

Secular or not is the issue you yourself started.

Even bigger issue is

Should India stop calling itself a secular state?
