Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

Few days ago, I was reading article on Huff Post. It was about an ad of jewllery. Marketing department of brand took two surprising factor into consideration.

  1. Color
  2. Divorced/Widow/Single mother

Indian society is conservative when it comes to above issues. How do you view these thing in Pakistan.

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

Same in regards to colour imo

Not sure why a marketing dept would care if someone is divorced, a widow or a single mother

Quote from article.

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

As far as I know, the preference of light skin color over darker skin was originally brought by the British. Even in the old British poetry, skin untouched by the sun was considered attractive. This sort of mentality is common today almost in the entire Asian continent.

As for women being divorced or widowed or single mothers, I would say Pakistani society has not fully accepted divorced women. But widows are not shunned, or discriminated upon. I wouldn't think something like this would be as controversial if it was to be aired in Pakistan.

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

May be not different from India…

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

I always wanted to know who started it and why. You answered the who, now who will answer the why :hmmm:

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

oh yeah Fair is kind of the 'only' lovely in Pakistan, more than India. Indian film/drama industry has numerous dusky actresses as lead roles.
I have come across very few Pakistanis who don't think fair is the 'only' lovely and all of them were girls in an online community.

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

Because of an inferiority complex…

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

Well, if the English started it, wouldn’t it be because of superiority complex ?:hmmm:

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

It might be superiority complex, but now it is inferiority complex among South Asians…

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

I answered the who, I'd guess I'm capable of answering the why part as well.

Why was it that only the Africans were taken as slaves for the Western communities? They were the ones working in their homelands under the broiling sun on the desserts, jungles or wherever they could find food. As a result, producing the most melanin in their skin cells. For hundreds of centuries, dark skin had been associated with the people who face poverty, struggles, and do labor work outside in the fields, thus getting darker by each passing day. For the British, lighter skin color meant no physical labor, a higher income, an easier, wealthier and a more luxurious lifestyle. Therefore, maintaining the lightest skin color for themselves, and degrading those of darker skin was just another method for the British to show superiority over all the rest.

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

In recent times, it got an economic perspective as well. There are hundreds of beauty products that are to be marketed in our part of the world and for creating need for usage of those products such concepts ‘gora is fair’ were gradually introduced in the society. Otherwise, our literature and folk songs refer to ‘Kaala shah kala, mera kala hai dildar ni goriyan nu paran karo’.

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

Studies also suggest that good economic condition do effect on appearance, height and color...???

Re: Is fair lovely in Pakistan too?

May be yes, may be not. The concept of Punjai jatti and Matyaran is probably not connected with these features. A poor pathan in Waziristan may get good features as compared to people living in settled areas of Pakistan

Gota love the British. They did live their divide and rule!
