Preference for fair skin is characteristic of indic/desi cultures. In Pashtun, dardic, tajik societies you wont find this obsession with skin colour.

Skin colour is very much a class issue and it's not just in Asia, it's always been an indicator of person's class, profession and background from the times ancient Greeks, Romans, Arabs to medieval Europe to current day Asia.

As far as I know, the preference of light skin color over darker skin was originally brought by the British. Even in the old British poetry, skin untouched by the sun was considered attractive. This sort of mentality is common today almost in the entire Asian continent.

As for women being divorced or widowed or single mothers, I would say Pakistani society has not fully accepted divorced women. But widows are not shunned, or discriminated upon. I wouldn’t think something like this would be as controversial if it was to be aired in Pakistan.

Before British Mughals started this. During Mughal era, a fair complexion means person belongs to Mughals and Mughals themselves referred to locals as ‘black’ and ‘slaves’.

In recent times, it got an economic perspective as well. There are hundreds of beauty products that are to be marketed in our part of the world and for creating need for usage of those products such concepts ‘gora is fair’ were gradually introduced in the society. Otherwise, our literature and folk songs refer to ‘Kaala shah kala, mera kala hai dildar ni goriyan nu paran karo’.
