Re: is desi food generally unhealthy

pingus khate hain dessi food?

if u wanna control ur oil portion use spray oil with low fat they r quite good

For Pakistani's, if u can't see a layer of oil an inch above the "real" gravy it's not yummy..

If u don't kill the salan by "bhooning" it, it's not yummy!

If u don't over-do the mirchi, it's not yummy!

K337, switch to Arabic cuisine..hardly any spices! :)

I know you work in the fashion industry. What do Pakistani models eat? Gajar and water with a full pack of cigarette?

Coffee, ciggy's.. lemon-water, tuc biscuits and when they're famished it's usually Subway!

u know the middle eastern food being healthy is true in some ways
although some may say when you pick grilled food over slow cooked food, meats really, you are increasing your risk for cancer. but here we are focused on fats.
I do believe that middle eastern food in general is healthier than sterotypical desi food (rather how its cooked)

what it does not explain is..why are ppl in middle east overweight in general.

^ That's cuz of desserts such as baklava which is laden with butter, nuts and sugar syrup! For dessert they'll have cream topped with nuts and honey!

The older generation is overweight, the younger generation nibbles on fresh veg's and grilled meat :) they use a lot of olive oil..

Cool. No vomiting food out after eating? It's no fun without that.

^ Thank God it's not in public.. and none that I know of! There are some people that just have to have their nihari and paiye!

Sorry Gina, the facts dont agree with your assessments. Mmiddle east in general still ranks pretty badly in terms of heart disease and obesity. UAE in particular ranks really badly across all age levels. They are doing something wrong.

some food for thought

Krispy Kreme to open amid continuing obesity concerns - Retail - ArabianBusiness.com

Currently the UAE holds the highest obesity rates in the world - higher than the United States - because of easy access to high calorie foods and a sedentary lifestyle. One in five adults in the region also suffers from one of the many obesity-related illnesses, diabetes.

Gulfnews: UAE to formulate anti-obesity plan

The UAE records one of the highest rates of obesity in the world, higher than the US. It is blamed on a sedentary lifestyle and easy access to food high in fat and calories. It also has one of the highest rates of diabetes, one of many obesity-related diseases, with an estimated one in five adults affected. Dr Huda Al Suwaidi, a consultant in family medicine at the ministry, said bad diet and lack of physical exercise were causing a wide range of health problems.

Khaleej Times Online - CHILD OBESITY RATES RISING STEADILY

Dr Abdul Rahaman Obeid, director of the Bahrain-based Arab Centre for Nutrition, said obesity prevalance in the Gulf region ranged between 10 to 15 per cent among children in primary schools, 15 to 30 per cent in students at the intermediate level and 20 to 40 per cent in students at the secondary level. He said the statistics were from a recent report of the World Health Organisation (WHO). “Obesity in married women reached levels as high as 50 to 75 per cent due to recurrent pregnancy,” he said.

With obesity, prevention was by far better than treatment. “Therefore effective measures ought to be taken to counter the phenomenon through reduced intake of fast-food rich in fats and soft drinks,” said Dr Sinan Hunood, a specialist in diabetes at Al Noor Hospital in Abu Dhabi. “It is a mistake to depend on one type of meal only. One needs between 45 to 65 per cent of starches, 10-35 per cent of proteins, 20-35 per cent of fats in addition to fibres such as lettuce every day.”

Dr Hunood said a new phenomenon has become apparent, and that was the spread of adult diabetes among children because of obesity or what was often abbreviated as ‘MODY’.

Obesity remains the number one health concern in the UAE | Abbott Laboratories

‘Obesity has reached alarming proportions in the Middle East as over 45 per cent of women in the 15-49 age group are overweight or obese, there has been increased emphasis on the care of hypertension and heart disease but obesity is still not being treated effectively. Thus, the need to tackle issues related to obesity more aggressively,’ said Professor Philip James a leading international obesity expert and Chairman of the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) and Director of the Public Health Policy Group (UK).

^ I've read all of those reviews in the papers..however if u visit malls and any other place, all u see is extremely fit people! The local girls are extremely thin.. yes some Emirati men are over-weight.. but the statistics and concerns even came as a shock to me.. cuz u hardly get to see over-weight people here..most of them are extremely conscious!

In Saudi yes, majority of the people seen walking around..from youth to adults was over-weight.. and had heart issues, diabetes..

I also shud add that the "locals" hardly eat Arabian cuisine.. it's either fast-food or Indian/Pakistani cuisine.. which brings us back to desi food being unhealthy :)

I went to South Beach in Miami, and all I saw were beautiful people. Based on that Americans must all be slim, fit, beautiful and look great in swim suits.

Maybe the fat ones don't go to the mall, or have other activities.

Re: is desi food generally unhealthy

there is difference in Pakistani and indian food.

Pakistani food is not unhealthy.
meat +rooti+vegitable you kidding ?????
at time could be little oily. but yes its healthy.

Paiye, liver, all other organs, butter naan, butter chicken, malai boti.. the use of oil (and so much of it too!) the spices and chilli's too! All the ghee and butter and cream? Not to mention the coconut milk and cashew paste that forms the base for soo many gravies!

Re: is desi food generally unhealthy

When you are going to die why not eat , feel happy and die contented , instead of starving yourself to death.
I am used to Pakistani food and flavor , nothing else appeals to my taste buds other than Pakistani food. I do eat food from other ethnicities , only once in a while.

Re: is desi food generally unhealthy

actually spices and chillies are good for your health.

actually from a health angle, teh spices that are used are all very healthy..garlic, ginger, coriander, cumin, chillies, turmeric, fennel, bayleaves, basil, cardamom, caraway seed, carom seeds, cinnamon, saffron, cloves..etc etc

look it up

Re: is desi food generally unhealthy

I always lose weight when I'm in Pakistan, eating normal ghar ka khana and no junk food, here in the US its a struggle to keep weight off, because there are hidden calories in everything!

Re: is desi food generally unhealthy

Does cooking in too much oil but draining that oil out of your plate make it healthy :halo:?

who eats all that on a daily basis anymore?? none that i know of.
