Chivalry connotes the characteristics of knighthood. The white knight rescuing the one in distress… It meant being courteous and being gallant, holding a door for someone…

just b/c a woman has the ability to be independent, hold down a job, does that mean that chivalry cannot exist anymore?

Very very true. Just two days ago I undertook an act of Chivalry and I got told off for doing so. And the lady in question spent a good 4 hours being pissy with me.
