is anyone a vegetarian?

how do you make sure you get your protein intake? and is it difficult to maintain the taste of food that desis r used to?

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

Chanay kee daal.

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

Tofu! Eggs? Fish?

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

Oh yes, I forgot. Fish is vegetable.

Thanks for reminding us, oh culinary guru Sidra

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

fish is not vege. how does tofu taste like? and can it be incorporated into desi dishes?
i need a desi vegetarian cookbook :)

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

desi veg dishes = dishes with daals and other legumes, paneer. and to a lesser extent green leafy vegs.

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

yeah queer but i am thinking about the protein. i cant live on daal and lobia for the rest of my life :/

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

chicken becomes vegetarian if you remove its skin and bones.... you can try that.

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

Excuse me but some vegetarians eat fish :snooty:

Tofu can be bland. I make it with vegetables in Chinese stir-fry. Maybe you can make Tofu Tikka Masala.

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

:snooty: r u attempting humour? (sorry i love using that emoticon )

how does that logic work queer? :naraz:

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

:snooty: they are called pescetarian. if they eat fish thats no longer vegetarian

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

will try tofu. exactly how bland is it?

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

if you don't mind me ask, vhy are you looking into becoming a vegetarian?

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

Can you please tell me your history? Your reason for wanting to be a vegetarian? I tried eating just fruits and vegetables for two weeks straight but did not last, ended up eating grilled chicken. After being so used to eating meat all of my life, I don't think I can last on daal, lobia, tofu, wagehera waghera as protein substitutes.

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

On it's own it's very bland, but can season tofu to give it flavour.

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

i vunder how achaari tofu would be hmm..

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

You can cook it and we'll come over for dinner. Oh, did you ever find a website or cookbook with authentic Keralite dishes?

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

I'm a pescetarian :) I've never posted here but one of my blog readers sent me a link to here hoping I could help.
Soo yes, I'm a pescetarian - meaning I eat fish but no other meat (chicken, lamb, etc).

Tofu is great - it IS bland but it's bland because you're supposed to flavour it anyway you want. You can marinate it overnight if you wish. My sister makes "Palak Tofu" sometimes instead of paneer (I'm not a fan of paneer)... and we often use it in pasta's/stirfry's instead of meat.

I recently got married and my mother in law decided to try it... she cooked it with tomatos and stuff and it tasted just like scrambled eggs :) Since it's Ramadan, you can also try Tofu pakoray! My MIL tried it and even the boys liked it

Other than that, good sources of protein are: Quinoa, Barley (and other whole grains), beans/lentils, nuts (add cashews etc to stir frys), any soy product like tempeh

Hope this helps!

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

hi thanks so much for replying. can u pm me a link to your blog if you have the recipes?

Re: is anyone a vegetarian?

i have been thinking about it for a long long time queer but didnt knw how to incorporate it into my lifestyle. the first time i noticed was in disection when i saw the muscles, that turned me off meat for a long time but i became severely anaemic.

i like the taste but i am not comfortable with it so just exploring :)
