I couldn’t really figure out if they’re about the same. Also, while browsing through a few websites I noticed some talking about Centrino Duo, while others talking talking about Intel Core Duo. Are the terms being used interchangebly?
In addition, is there a major difference between an AMD and an Intel processor?
Re: Is AMD Turion 64 X2 equivalent of Intel Core Duo?
Centrino is the combination of a Pentium M, Intel motherbaord chipset and intel wireless card
Core Duo is a newer chips which infact as worse perofrmance than a pentium M especially on latency. Makes u for it with better mem management in northbridge chip. The Core Duo has two chips basically so can be much faster than a centrino in certain cases.
Recently a Core 2 Duo released. This is very good, complete redesing of architecture since pentium 3. This is what I woud buy but costs more and rare. But seeing as I only buy IBM couldnt get one.
AMD laptop processors are useless comapred to intel.
Re: Is AMD Turion 64 X2 equivalent of Intel Core Duo?
AMD is much better.... u cant really compare intel wid AMD..intel r gonna be gome...go wid AMD Athlon X2 5200 ...or if u buyin laptop go wid AMD Turion X2 ..... u can easily get a desktop wid da monitor n everything for abt $700.... and a laptop for around $900-$1000...wid 2gb Memory....
Re: Is AMD Turion 64 X2 equivalent of Intel Core Duo?
Yup, The Turion is competing against the Core Duo/ Core Solo line. Centrino is a bit of an Intel marketing mistake. Core Duo is the name of the procesor. Centrino includes other stuff (like integrated wi-fi support, and other goodies). So Centrino is a family of products…not a processor.
Those who talk about AMD or Intel being better than the other are typically fans of one company or the other…kind of like coke vs pepsi
Emperically, benchmarks show that (so far!) Intel has taken the lead in performance.
Core Duo is older than Core 2 Duo, which is the latest flagship line. There are two flavours: one for laptops, and one for desktops. Here’s how they are labeled:
Desktop Versions
X6800 (Core 2 Extreme)- $999
E6700 (Core 2 Duo)- $530
E6600 (Core 2 Duo)- $316
E6400 (Core 2 Duo)- $224
E6300 (Core 2 Duo)- $183
Laptop Versions
T7600 (Core 2 Duo) - $637
T7400 (Core 2 Duo) - $423
T7200 (Core 2 Duo) - $294
T5600 (Core 2 Duo) - $241
T5500 (Core 2 Duo) - $209
(from Intel Core 2 - Wikipedia). The prices may already be out of date. And I don’t know if the laptop chips are out yet.
Focusing on the desktop chips for now, there actually is a diff. between E6300, E6400 and the others. These two have a 2MB cache on-chip, whlie the others have 4MB. To make a long story short, the more cache on-chip, the better the performance. So looking at the pricing, I think E6600 is the sweet-spot. Otherwise, the only other diff. between the processors is the clock speed they run at. The higher model numbers have a higher clock speed…
In terms of running applications, there is no real difference between Intel and AMD other than hard-to-notice performance differences. Even then, for laptops often the hard drive and other things are what really slow the system down!
One of the benifits of Core 2 Duo is (supposed) to be it’s lower power consumption…that means the machine runs less hot. And longer battery life…but that’s what they always claim…
Re: Is AMD Turion 64 X2 equivalent of Intel Core Duo?
I think if someone was talking about a centrino intrested in a LAPTOP not a desktop. I have been buying AMD for ages so you cant say I have a preferance, infact I dont care who makes a processor. The bottom line is AMD mobile CPU's are power hungry so you need to carry a power generator with you. Pentium M on the other hand is well designed for low power consumtion, good pipelines.
Core 2 has EMT64 extensiosns so vista 64 comaptible. Much increased efficieny.
Even on the desktop market AMD dont have anything to competet with core 2, only price cuts.
Re: Is AMD Turion 64 X2 equivalent of Intel Core Duo?
The reason I asked is because I still haven't ended my search for a laptop. I've seen a number of HP laptops with AMD processors. I have an idea about the Intel processors, but I'm completely clueless when it comes to AMD processors. I don't wanna end up buying an AMD, which would be an equivalent to Intel M/Centrino for instance, when I can very well go for something equivalent of Core Duo or Core 2 Duo.
Re: Is AMD Turion 64 X2 equivalent of Intel Core Duo?
Always go for AMD :k: … dont bother yourself to even think about Intel processor, If you r a graphic designer or animator or games lover then AMD is righ choice for you, listen to my personal and practical experience with AMD.. you will always be satisfied with AMD performance compare to Intel.
Re: Is AMD Turion 64 X2 equivalent of Intel Core Duo?
Dont listen to these lot. They are all being subjective to their experiences. Nothing that AMD has will match a Core 2 Duo even comapring a AMD desktop to a core 2 duo in a laptop.
Re: Is AMD Turion 64 X2 equivalent of Intel Core Duo?
Sadiyah, risc is correct. The new Core 2 DUO processors kick amds butt unfortunately. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2014685,00.asp
A little quote from the article: It’s clear that Intel’s Core 2 Duo lineup offers superior performance across the product line when compared with AMD’s Athlon 64 X2. In some applications, even a lower-cost Core 2 Duo can outperform some of the higher-end Athlon 64 X2s.
If you have the money, go for the core 2 duo. Its way faster then the X2 Turion by AMD
Re: Is AMD Turion 64 X2 equivalent of Intel Core Duo?
And to power twocoresyou need twice as much wattage. Whereas Intel will last twice as long. Mobilecomputing is not just about dpeed, even though Intel win here too
