but remeber if something goes wrong you cant buy sony parts from anyone. Only sony will sell them under the condition they fit them. I personally hate the reflective layeron sony screens, some like them

Would it really hurt if I decide to go with Core Duo as opposed to Core 2 Duo? Would it be good for the next 3 years or so?

I'll be using it mainly for school and surfing the net.

Not really. Go for whatever suits your budget. I use a T40P 2 years old, Pentium M (centrino) with 2gb RAM. Meets my needs perfect.
