IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

Re: Afridi stunned/ Pakistani players mistreated: Afridi’s manager

Afridi has a Manager ?

Dekh merey PUI, lets agree on one thing. Most of the 11 Pakistani players avaiable in the auction are the most in demand players in the world right now and teams would do anything to get players like Afridi, Gul, Umar Akmal, Imaran nazir etc. So people who agree with Mr Lalit Modi that Pakistan players were not picked just like any other player who was not picked are either stupid or they think others are stupid.

Now IPL franchises have al the right to pick whoever they want to pick, afterall they are investing huge amount of $$. The ponit is that this development didn't happen overnight. Political climate has not become unstable all of a sudden. It was equally unstable when Pakistan players were asked to submit their paperwork. Why didn't anyone tell Pakistani players at that time that they will not be picked.

Re: Afridi stunned/ Pakistani players mistreated: Afridi’s manager

^Exactly. They could have easily told Pakistani players that it’s still not the right time for you to play in India, or get clearance from the government.

re: IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

I don't give a **** about IPL anyways. Cricket looks ugly, real ugly in IPL arrangements.

re: IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

Just read somehwere that Uncle butt tried calling Lalit and he didnt pick up the phone.

Instead of calling up Modi (who doesnt waana talk to him ) why doesnt Butt try to arrange a test series for pak with any team as Pak not playing test cricket till this summer?

any guess how many calls that he has made to cricketing boards to get ANY international cricket between Feb and May? ( to me, t20 series with Eng doesnt count)

In IPL II and Champions League .... they made it quite clear tht they don't want Pakistani players .....
Now if entire world keep on pressurizing them to include Pakistani players ... they really have only 2 options ...
1) Officially declare tht no Pakistani will be benefit in any way from India .... and make a fool of themselves
2) Do what they did in auction .......... which is just about perfect way to get rid of Pakistanis.

what pressure? Please clarify. It was blatant anti Pakistani feeling.

BTW i don't want Pakistani players to play IPL till Indians behave themselves.

Well, they dont have a choice anymore do they ??

re: IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

I am OK with IPL not wanting Pakistani players but Indians should not hide behind lame excuses of "doesn't make business sense". They should openly say they do not want Pakistani players because they are Pakistanis.

Don't be so arrogant. Every dog has its day......today is yours and it will be for sometime. Pak will shine and rise again both nation and its cricket. Until then we will be happy if India keep failing in World Championship....as they did in last summer and their supporters burn their effigies.

re: IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

Do indian posters here genuinely believe that likes of Afridi, Gul, Nazir and Akmal would be ignored purely because of strategic reasons?

re: IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

this is to all the INDIANS here who r talking ****

CHAMPIONS R PRICELESS

re: IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

I really dont want to say that I have in my mind.... The only thing I can say is that Indians showed there true color against Pakistan. pretty much racist crap, not business at all.

re: IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

Thats the ''Hindu'' mentality.. I always say that india will always be our enemy..whatever we do.. so we should treat them like enemies..not friends..After all they have some grief int heir heart about being ruled over for 1000 years by us..so let them feel some relief by doing these cheap tactics.. lolz.Thats all they can do..
And by the way these greedy players should not have gone for ipl in the first place.. Now our cricket team should refuse to play in india in future not even in world cup matches which will be held in india, if our players have a little bit of ''ghairat'' in them..

Woke up this morning and could not believe the news. Am disappointed on multiple levels:

  1. I think it is a major loss to the IPL and the Indian public to not have Pak players like Afridi, Aamir, etc involved.

  2. I know I may be in a minority here, but I do not believe the Indian public has a hate of all things Pakistani. Sure, emotions were at an all-time high after the terrorist attack on Mumbai when there was strong suspicion of involvement by the Pak state. But the events that have happened over the last year, and continue to happen, in Pakistan, have made it clear to most Indians that Pak is as much a victim of this as we are. For example, right after Nov 26, there was a large hue and cry about not letting Pak artists perform in India. All that has since more than died down, and singers like Atif Aslam are consistently ranked at the top of the charts. I think the same attitude extends to Pak cricketers, and comments from fringe political parties notwithstanding, Pak cricketers would have very popular in the IPL.

  3. The IPL owners are only in this for profit. From a business sense, if the product you are selling is better with Pak players and acceptable to your customers, why wouldn’t you have them? Same logic that Bollywood producers use when they hire Pak artists. And I believe the IPL owners and the IPL did want to have the Pak players participate.

  4. The idea that this exclusion was a decision based on talent is too laughable to even discuss. I also don’t believe this was just a case of each team making a rational risk-based decision on the Pak players based on perceived risk of them not getting a visa. Seems far too orchestrated for that. Find it hard to believe that if it were just the visa risk issue, without any outside interference, that some team wouldnt have punted just $100,000 on someone like Afridi on the off chance that his visa came through. This reeks of interference from above.

  5. I believe it was the government stepping in behind the scenes and making it clear that they would not play ball. I question the value of this interference – does nothing but come across as a churlishly petty and spiteful, AND is completely inconsistent with other contacts we continue to have with Pak at multiple levels. If (for whatever reason), the Indian govt believed that it did not want to have relations with Pakistan, then they should announce this formally and implement it at all levels. And do it openly – that way you maximize the political mileage too. Not selectively, and not with this lack of transparency.

  6. Finally, even assuming all of the above is true, I am disappointed at how Lalit Modi and the IPL handled this. As I said, I believe they were serious initially about including Pak players when the auction list was announced. Probably all the way up to the last day or so before the auction, which is when I think the govt decided to make its stand clear. What was within their control is their reaction to this. What they should have done is dealt with it in a more professional and up-front manner. Modi could have started the auction with a comment about the situation and explained the issue with the visas. Announced that as a consequence of this the Pak players were being taken off the list, and would not be available for the auction. This would have been the professional thing to do. Also more respectful and considerate. The way things played out, I don’t blame the Pak players for feeling insulted. I feel upset myself.

Like I said, very disappointing.

re: IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

I am not watching IPL.

Only cricket could have improved relations between the two countries.

Indian politicians have been playing ‘Pakistani terrorist’ card since 1947 to score points among the locals. I am not surprised that Pakistani players got snubbed, afterall the terrorists attacks were sponsored by the state  and Kasab is Afridi’s cousin. Morons!

If the cricket world loses Pakistani talent, it will be everyone’s loss and there is no one to blame other than politicians, businessmen and PCB!

Well, I genuinely believe that if IPL/BCCI did not want to pick Pak players, they would have said so outright. I dont think any other cricket body in the world would have had the guts to stand up to BCCI on that issue :snooty:

Having got that point out of the way, I genuinely think it was the franchisees call to pick who they want. Were the franchisees biased against Pak players ? Maybe - most franchisees are Indians and India-Pak do not exactly share the best of relationships today. But that did not stop them from picking Pak players for Seasons 1 & 2 (even though they did not play due to the visa issue). So I dont think franchisee bias was an issue either.

So bottomline is that this step was taken by the franchisees for purely strategic/business/commercial reasons. All franchisees are in the business to make money and they will take the steps that best help them meet that objective.

Now depite that if you guys want to feel sorry for your players and crib & complain about BCCI/IPL, feel free :hoonh:

Re: IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

^ If you believe that it was purely for strategic/business/commercial reasons, do you really think that players like Afridi and others were rejected purely for these reasons. feel free to live in make believe world.

Re: IPL auction: Pakistani players ignored

It is not a business decision Punjabee, it was a decision made on national origin and that is a NO NO in the corporate world...well, civilized corporate world and not that of India.
