Inzamam the Captain

I have never really been a big fan of Inzi the captain but I’m really surprised at the backlash after the first match defeat over his captaincy. I dont believe anything has changed in his style of leading the side. Just because we didnt win doesnt mean it’s his fault now. It’s been his fault all along being a sub-standard leader. He was just blessed (still is) with some very gifted cricketers. I dont believe Pakistan ever won a game cause of Inzi’s astute captaincy skills (yes teams do win cause of their captain, Fleming & Vaughan are prime examples) Either a Shoaib Akhtar has performed a miracle (whenever fit) or an Asif has come to the rescue, either a Rana is in form or an Afridi blasted the opposition away, a Yousaf is busy shattering records or a Younis is busy collecting runs. It has always been indivisual brilliance of players that has won games for Pakistan in the past under Inzi’s leadership. Never really his leadership qualities.

PCB should have realized pretty quickly after Inzi took over as the captain. He is not the captain who makes things happens, he waits for them to happen. Somtimes it pays off and sometimes it doesnt and we just call it the game of cricket but in reality the quality players he’s had at his disposal we should have won a lot more games then we did. I had written on the board before that if anything would cost Pakistan the world cup it would be his captaincy (of lackof) skills. Contrary to the belief of many people who always defend him saying he looks laid back but is actually very calculating, he’s not. He looks laid back and is laid back and thats just the way he is and thats the way he plays the game. It works fine for him as a batsman as he appears so calm and collected but dont do a whole lot for a leader. Dravid is also very calm and cool but he aint no slaker by any standards. I personally still believe that Ganguly was a better captain then Dravid but Dravid is himself not such a bad captain. He is a good student of the game and learns quickly from his mistakes. Inzi unfortunatley on the other hand doesnt learn from any mistakes cause thats just the way he will keep doing things. He could be the captain for the next 10 years and I doubt if anything would change.

Well there are still players in the ranks who can take Pakistan a little ways into this cup but I believe Inzi now needs to start consulting a couple of good thinkers in the team more often on the field. Younis Khan and Shoaib Malik in my opinion are both pretty good readers of the game and should play more active role in the putting things togather. As a matter of fact I believe Malik is a very smart cricketer and should always have a say so whatever happens in the middle. Inzi can take all the glory of being a good captain while keeping these two working in the background for him. They both come acorss as the kinda people who wouldnt mind giving Inzi the glory for a chance to have a real shot at the World Cup.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

Very positive and extremely good post!

Re: Inzamam the Captain

Very well said, but unfortunately we are stuck with him as the captain (that was given to him based on seniority and nothing else) and I highly doubt Pakistan will be able to win the World Cup because of his captaincy, unless someone performs extraordinarily. He's the kind of captain who just waits for the opposition to keep piling runs when bowling first and just wants the bowlers to finish the over in the alloted time so that Pakistan can start their "baari".

Re: Inzamam the Captain

Good post LM. Problem with all the Desi Boards is that their process of selecting the captain is screwed. This is the process they follow

  1. Short list 3-4 senior guys.
  2. out of this list take out the guys who were captain before and failed. 1 gone.
  3. Is he permanent team member for both ODI and test team. 1 more gone.
  4. Out of reaming 2 find out the guy who is in form.
  5. If he mellow and can be managed by board, make him captain. if not make the other guy captain.

No where is this list leadership skils comes. It is unheard of any young guys becoming captain if they have leadership skills. Imagine anything like 'Greame Smith' or 'Naser Hussain' episode happening in Pak or India.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

India, WI, Eng, SL are competetive or slightly weak or better teams as compared to Pak and under inzy's leadership Pakistan had a better record against them even with half the team (that is 6-7 players) shuffled. So in my opinion Inzy has done great. He is not perfect but he is comparable to any other captain.

SA and Aus were THE better teams than the rest so it is not surprising if Pak has failed to compete them at times.

Without Akhtar, Pak is simply a team of boys this means an incomplete team and its hard for anyone to lead that team to success.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

I think we have only ever won one match because of Inzi's captaincy. That was at Bangalore in 2005 when he used Sami intelligently after tea and attacked with Kaneria and the strong Indian batting line-up folded in no time

Re: Inzamam the Captain

Tell me one captain from a test playing nation that he is a comparable to ? As far as the teams you mentioned above please clearify what format of the game you are talking about ? England is a very good test side, not a very good ODI side. WI a half way decent ODI side but not much of a test side. In anycase since we are talking about the world cup which is ODI format Pakistan has a much better team then England and West Indies. Sri Lanka and India are both very formidable at this time. Both have great attacking batsmen and enough depth in bowling to skittle out or restrick the opposition. They both also have one more thing in common, a great wicket keeper batsman.

Pakistan on the other hand is also picking the wrong team to play the matches. Inzi once again confirmed that he's hoping Kaneria would win him matches. Kaneria has barely played ODI's in his career, he is an unproven weapon. To top it all he is a clumsy fielder and a horrific batsman. I would prefer to see the following team once Afridi's ban is ove.

Shahid Afridi
Imran Nazir
Younis Khan
Mohammad Yousaf
Inzamam-ul-Haq
Shoaib Malik
Azhar Mehmood
Kamran Akmal
Mohammad Sami
Rao Iftikhar
Umar Gul

Depending on Rao's form in the tournament I would switch between him and Yasir Arafat. That would give us a pretty deep batting line up with Akmal coming in @ 8. Plus we will have 6 bowlers with Sami, Rao and Gul specialist bowlers and Shoaib Malik, Afridi and Azhar Mahmood sharing 20 overs between them. They are all capable enough to bowl more incase someone else is going for runs. If Azhar fails we can always bring in Hafeez for him but the position for Hafeez should be down the order. He is good enough to come down the order but not an opener, a decent off spinner and a good fielder. This way we will also have an improved fielding side.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

That would be news to even Inzi.

I like Inzi for this…taking class of the boyz…:

Re: Inzamam the Captain

^ check it urself at cricinfo.
Salim Malik is an all-time exception. compare the rest with Inzy and get the answer.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

The point is that he may be a good cricketer but he is clueless when it comes to captaincy. He is not a leader. Leaders are like Imran Khan.

Inzi has no sense of captaincy and his below par, negative approach as a captain which has lost us a lot of games in the past. That's why IMran came few years ago and said that Younis should be the captain.

Inzi makes bad decisions and even if he makes an occasional good decision, he makes them late.

Even in last game:

He shouldnt have had Umer Gul bowl 7 overs in a row.
When Windies were down 77/3, he should have applied more pressure. Instead he spread the field and did not attack.
He brought Gul back when Kanaria was doing well in final overs.
In short he did not use his bowlers well.
Also in batting, an idiot would know the required run rate. Why is Pakistan the only team that when 5 down, we thing its over. Remember South Africa, 96/6 and they still ended up over 300 last year against india. Almost similar story this year when we visited them.

I think for Inzi glass is always half empty. He does not think outside the box. Remember you cannot become what you want to by remaining what you are. Inzi makes bad decisions, he his not attacking. He gives too many runs. Windies shouldnt had score more than 200. It was only his bad judgment that led to that.

Thats my verdict. Period! Like it or hate it, I will like a new captain after the worldcup (Which I think inzi will retire anyways)

Re: Inzamam the Captain

*Even when we had great captains like Imran and Wasim, we blew hot and cold as a team. What we are missing currently are stars like Shoaib, Asif, and Razzaq (and Afridi for the first match against the Windians). Star power is what wins you the big matches. People can hate on the fat limping party-boy all they want, they know deep down in their hearts that they are missing a bowler of his caliber for the big event.
I have said this before, even in WC 92, had we not had brilliant bowlers like Wasim, Aaqib and Mushtaq, Imran's "attacking strategies" would have all gone in vain. You need individual brilliance, but it has to be managed right. Now, we have Inzi who has had problems with match-winners like Shoaib just because he likes to party and have a good time. There in lies the difference; Inzi wants yes-men like Sami in the team but their performances are for everyone to see. *

Re: Inzamam the Captain

Yaar you are right but again go back to 92. Who did we had. Wasim, Imran and Javed. Today we have Yousaf, Inzi, Younis.

May be one way you are right, we dont have bowlers. Yes we are below par but i still think we are a team who can upset any team except Australia.

But this past dismal performance has led everyone down. After watching the Ireland-zimbabwe thriller today, i think they may have a better chance.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

^
Aus is currently a struggling team like Pak. There key players (Lee, symonds) are not playing, Lee ins not available and Symonds is not fit.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

yep I know and thats why they are great. disregard of what their team is, they are still above average.

South Africa may have a better team now but they dont have temperament to get to a high tension tournament. Its the curse of bambino. May be broken this year haan

Re: Inzamam the Captain

^
SA fall to nature and rules, otherwise they entered with better team many times.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

I guess its become fair to criticize inzy now that we are down. Just like its cool to hate on microsoft for all nerds, it has become a new fashion statement to criticize Inzi. Its like we are experts at finding scapegoats. We begged for team unity after the 2003 world cup and that is precisely wat Inzi gave us, yet we take every little weakness in Inzi and exploit the hell out of it. The negative vibes at least at this point are hardly gonna serve a purpose. You may have excellent & valid points but we gotta admit that its too late for this, unless the team management comes to this forum for advice. The fact of the matter is Inzi will never be Imran nor its likely to have another Imran ever; we don't even have a genius like Wasim or fighters/match winners like Miandad. I don't understand the logic that when players perform, its their brilliance that makes the difference and when the same players under perform, it becomes Inzi's fault.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

Even when Pakistan is winning, there are many people on this forum who have consistently maintained that Pakistan wins despite Inzi's captaincy and not because of it. Lets be very clear. Inzi is captain solely because he is a senior player, is respected in the team and has held them together for the last few years. He has practically no leadership or cricket technician skills whatsoever. Once he retires, we will miss his batting but no one will really miss his brilliance in captaincy. What we will miss is that after Inzi the team will again fall into petty politics and dramabaazi by the captains and other senior players.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

Specualtive.

Simply because the board has backed Inzi on all issues his authority has not been challenged, Shoaib Akhter is a case in point who was made to suffer because of his issues with Inzi. Moin Khan has been out in the cold, Azhar mahmood has only recently made a comeback. Point being, Inzi was never sure about his ability to lead and was always second guessing other players motive that led to his constant attrition with those who cud be a threat to his way of leadership.

Pakistan has gained because Moyo, Yunis Khan and M Asif have proven to be consistent performers with flashes of talent from Akmal, Rana and others. Unfortunately, Inzi has rarely shown any interest in consulting these players who may have been able to add value. Inzi believes in talking to no one and hope everything will happen as planned, thus the dopeyness.

Re: Inzamam the Captain

Look right now.

When WI for 77/3 we had had defensive field placing. Look what NZ is doing with england. almost everyone in attacking field.

inzi - god player, bad captain

Re: Inzamam the Captain

Nicely stated and thats why I call him 'DOPEY'.
