Some time back, there was a project that we (mods) were discussing where we would have a database that would list what guppies do as professionals and some other information about them, their hobbies, extracurricular activities, and involvement in the community etc.. I have no idea what happened to that project but I am thinking this is something that can be helpful (you never know). Besides, I think it’ll be interesting to know what our fellows do when they offline. I know we have some very talented and successful people on gupshup. i.e. Uncle Stalker, Danial Shah, some doctors, and businesspeople etc.

Of course if we have a normal sticky thread, it can go off topic and serious replies will be buried in the flood. I am thinking to have a locked sticky. If someone wants to contribute, he/she can PM the moderator and we can add the information to the thread. Yes such topics really belong to careers and academics and there was a thread there some time ago but for some reason it got removed. If we open this thread there, I will have no control over it and I won’t be able to keep it clean/managed. That’s why I am thinking of opening it here, so that I (and other café mods) could personally maintain it.

Before I open such thread (I would start off with information about me), I wanted to see how many people are willing to contribute to it. Based on how many people are interested, we’ll go in that direction.

So, are you willing to give information about yourself, such as your real name, educational background, when you moved to your city (if you did), what company you work for, if you are a volunteer as well, community involvement etc.? I am willing to share this.

EDIT: Students are also welcome to share information about them. But please keep in mind, to be consistent, I wouldn’t want people to hide their names or give false information. Again, you don’t have to share your age, address etc. but the more information you can provide, the better. Mods will review it, of course, before posting it.

Dashingkhan I could've done that but I wanted to discuss my idea with my fellows first. Woh kia kahtey hain, "mein sab ko aitmaad mein ley raha hoon". It will be even better if I have a few people's support, rather than just being the only one in that sticky thread. I don't want it to look like I am forcing myself on others :)

i dont think its a good/safe idea..
firstly..not all of us r angels..and just like any other forum i am sure there r some stalkers up in here too..
some ppl..like me..would avoid tellin ppl on net even my real name..
i know u wouldnt mind..firstly..because ur a guy..married..and u have been here for a long time..and u dont care if someone decided to stalk u or whtever..but i am sure most of the ppl would mind..just how its not a good idea posting ur pic in here or in any other online forum..its not a good idea going on abt telling ppl abt "ur your real name, educational background, when you moved to your city (if you did), what company you work for, if you are a volunteer as well, community involvement etc."

Aana Thank you for your opinion and you do bring up a good point. I also had given it a thought and here's my input on it: I don't think anyone would want to/can stalk only if they know your first name. Think about how many people there are in your country or organization that may have same first name. I am not going to ask for last names. One can say I am an accountant, as opposed to I am an accountant in company ABC. Again, that's why it'll be PMed to mods because we would to remain consistant as much as possible. As for the city, you don't have to give that out, I just meant "place of resident" by that, and country would do just a fine job.

Educational background, hobbies, volunteership, and community involvement cannot be used to stalk people. As for me not registering with my real name, I do have another ID on gupshup "Sohail A" that has about 10K posts. The reason why chose shikra instead of sohail was because Sohail was taken. Later I joined with Sohail A but decided to keep posting with Shikra as this is my original ID.

And you are right, this is completely voluntary, not a laazmi thing. That's exactly why I am trying to see how many people are brave enough who are willing to provide some information that may be helpful to others. Instead of going to others, may be if I have someone who lives in the same city as I am in, I can go to that guppy for services. That's my idea behind it.

Orpheus and Pakora this thread is basically to see how many people will want to go ahead with this idea. I have a number in mind and when I see more than that number of people are willing, I will go ahead with it. Members then can PM cafe mods with their information because only mods will be able to post in a locked thread. But thank you for stepping up. If we do go ahead with it, wait for my next thread that will be a sticky here.

get to know a little bit more about ppl
and as shikra said, u dont have to be too specific.
It would be good to know everyone is

so first name, insted of full name
city or state or region or country whatever you are comfortble with
field of study and not uni name
industry u work in and not company name

so one can get a little more info about people aorund him, without ppl sacrificing their privacy.

i have shared prior experience with sharing too much info about myself wth others , and will let u hear about it to make your own choices of how much u should share

In the 90's I had given my work numbr to someone who wa fooled by other ppl online into giving it to them and then these ppl called and harassed me, called my bossand all, it as very embarassing. it was an internship and it was at tail end of it so i had to deal with just for a few weeks but it was a pain. luckily my boss and company security were on my side, my number was changed and anyone calling to speak with me had to know my full name, othrwise they will not be forwarded, company voicemail box that belonged to me had a statement from our company lawyer that anyone calling to harass company personnel would be tracked and charges brought against them

there re many ppl here, some u know, some u dont, some u think u know..many who just read.

be careful, all kindsa sick *******s out there
