Introducing the Bottle

Is it always such a nightmare?

Noor is now two months old and from day one has refused to take a bottle. The lactation consultant at the hospital tried for three days to no avail.

I have tried four different types of feeders, all the nipples available on the market and five different kinds of formulas. Nothing works!

There is so much that I cannot do because she won’t take a bottle.

Please help.

my bhabhi used to start with breat-feeding and then after a while [few mins] she would put in the feeder in baby's mouth. worked for her perfectly. :-)

Thanks EP...I'll try that. I must say it sounds a bit painful....you try taking something OUT of a hungry child's mouth. LOL

Nobody else has any first-hand experience???

:-)
well no pain, no gain
if you want to keep on breast-feeding the baby for months then its upto you.

she was told by her doctor to try this method and it worked for her
:-)

I always read that breat-feeding was supposed to be much healthier anyway.

Isn't the bottle kind of - unnatural? Out of curiosity, what benefit is gained from bottle feeding rather than breast feeding?

I had the same problem with Harris, I tried almost every brand of formula and bottle but with no luck. Now I've started expressing my own milk and he seems happy to take that in a bottle, so it would seem it was the actual formula he didn't like rather than the feeder.

Putting a feeder into a babys mouth in the middle of breastfeeding does sound rather painful, not sure if I would want to give that a go!

Ahhh....so it's a bouncing baby boy!! Excellent. Congrats shahreen. And Harris is a wonderful name. After all that searching we both picked pretty traditional names huh? LOL.

maddy,
It is very true that nursing a baby is much, much healthier and preferred than bottle feeding...and I have no qualms about carrying on for at least 6 to 8 months, or longer if I can. But problems arise when I want to go out for a few hours and leave her with daddy. He's just not equipped to deal with feeding her unless she takes a bottle (giggle).

shahreen,
I tried expressing and managed to get a couple of ounces for her and yes, she took that from a bottle from my sis-in-law. But the difficulty I'm having there is that my lactation consultant told me to express after I've fed her....and greedy lil Noor never seems to leave any to express. Now what???

I have thought of skipping a feed and expressing it to give her the bottle but when she wails in hunger I just can't bear to see it.

Is there no other way?

the breat-feeding vs bottle-feeding saga hasn't ended yet.......recent research shows that the advantages of breast-feeding are NOT that much......maybe it is even worse.........but research is continuing.....

as of yet, breat-feeding is recommended

i have 2 kids and they have got feeders from first week , never had any problem with it but i had problems with breat-feeding .i cant really help u in this case ..try to fallow others advice ...and good luck .oh by the way how old is baby ?

Congrats, Muzna! good to know things are going well.

As for your question… when in doubt… consult La Leche League!

here are a couple of links from their site:

http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBSeptOct94p152.html

hope they help.

oh that’s new to me! where did you get his information???

what I know and see is quite different. For instance, try this for scientific proof:
http://www.lalecheleague.org/cbi/biospec.htm

our immunology departmens has done resaearch on this matter (as have other groups throughout the world)…

when bottle feeding was newly developed it was very hype to promote that. in recent decades however, ppl found out that breast feeding prevented a lot of diseases later on…but some latest research has shown that there might not be a difference between the two forms of feedind…or even that both have there own advantges and disadvantages…BUT this has to be looked into more deeply, so therefore doctors still/usually recommend breast feeding.

hehehe, welcome to parenthood guyz !!!!

tiny things they are yet extremely clever to tell the diff bw the bottle and the breast.

whereas first people thought that breastfeeding prevented several diseases...it is now clear that breast feeding actually only delays the onset of those diseases like asthma, coeliac disease etc.

However, breast feeding is still recommended for its other beneficial effects.

on the other hand some mothers are discouraged to give breastfeeding: if they have AIDS, diabetes, drug use etc. cuz they can pass on onto the child`

Noor.. such a pretty name..

:-)

I was told to express after a feed too but like you said, there's never a whole lot left. I admit it is hard express when your baby is crying to be fed but once you get into a routine it should be fine.

Can't help, as in our experience, it was always the other way round. Since all three were C-sec, so they were dual-fed from early on (anesthesia took a while to wear off). The problem was that once the kids get hooked on bottle, they really didn't like breast-fed all that much, cz bottle allows them to draw more and they feed quickly. I dont remember which brand we started them off, but it was probably Lactogen 1.

Muzna......
i wonder why you need a bottle......i mean if you are not working....!!
my first one was bottle fed n i always regret it
n now my younger son is turning 2 in a months time n he is totally breast fed until now ........now i'm planing to discontinue

well yes its difficult sometimes but still better........i'm talking from experience.........the bottle fed one is not that healthy than his younger brother.........n i don't remember a single timewhen my younger one was sick for more than a day.........!!!!!

believe me ....if u can feed her..... please don't introduce a bottle ........!!!!

seems like daughter is deciding better than mom....:)

btw ......i love her name.....NOOR ONAISA SYED.......(hope i spelt it right)
