Internet Addictions

I don’t what it is, but now, more than ever before, I see people living through their iphones, and their laptops, ignoring the surrounding social scene.

Starbucks, any coffee shop, even at restaurants now for lunch - you’ll see people on their ipads, iphones, etc. The other day, went to eat outside, and dude sitting next to us was sitting alone on his ipad reading a book while eating his dinner.

How sad have we become? Before, I remember sitting down with people and playing board games, etc.

Re: Internet Addictions

All our childhood they been telling us that a book is your best friend , and now you are telling us that its not ???

Re: Internet Addictions

i know right! i take the train and bus to school and every one is on their phones! ten years ago, people will be reading books. now- it's all about phones and iPads. (same for me- use my phone too much when outside)

Re: Internet Addictions

it's like... when im out and have few mins, ill check my facebook. maybe twitter. then email. and perhaps post a pic on instagram. whatsapp or text family and friends. there is too much to do :)

Re: Internet Addictions

sad but true

Re: Internet Addictions

Time changes.People change.
Its human nature to dwell on things of the past.

Re: Internet Addictions

I only listen to music. Nothing else. I limit my internet time to have a social life.

Re: Internet Addictions

Being social is a thing of the past?

I agree with OP. You go to a party and what do you see? People sitting together, but all busy on their smartphones. Instead of talking to each other in real, they will be posting updates of the party on facebook and have a fb concersation instead of a real one.

Oh and then this. All these people who are the biggest pals on fb, and when they see each other on an event, they will be acting all social awkward around each other.

Re: Internet Addictions

FB is social networking too.Just a little different from past social networks :)

Re: Internet Addictions

And you see no difference in real-life contact and virtual contact with people?

Re: Internet Addictions

Ofcourse there is a difference.
But then again its just evolution.
Cooking now is different as compared to cooking before microwaves , pressure cookers etc.
Education is different. and so on.

Re: Internet Addictions

I am not against social media and neither am I speaking against having virtual contacts.

But evolution has nothing to do with losing contact with the real world and going all virtual instead.

That does scream 'Internet addiction'

Re: Internet Addictions

50 yrs from now ,it will be normal and wont be called an addiction :)

Re: Internet Addictions

social media networking is not a true socialism, where you can manage your friends, hide one friend from other friends, pose something what you cannot be, and there are a lot of things with social media you can do that really doesn’t promote socialism

Re: Internet Addictions

Socially awkward people have emotions too.Acha!

Re: Internet Addictions

Nope. They have facebook status updates and tweets.

Re: Internet Addictions

it is sad.

Re: Internet Addictions

I hope that day never comes.

The people who are waiting for those times to come and seem to be perfectly fine with it, need to make some changes in their life.

Re: Internet Addictions

I think I need to limit my time on the net too. I have daily status updates, and it ends up bring up conversation at work the next day when we're all laughing about something funny I posted, which is why it's not soooo bad. But still, I walk into a coffee shop now, and whereas before people used to try initiating conversations with each other, everyone ignores the other person and sits on the net.

It's ridiculous. Not only is there no venue to meet desi people if you're new to a city (mind you, not just guys, but girls too) - desi cliques being so inbred the way they are - but there is also no venue to now just have a conversation with someone.

The only people that know how to start a conversation anymore in a public place are the elderly, cuz they haven't caught on to the technology. I remember when I was travelling two years ago looking for jobs, I would make a lot of elderly friends, cuz they'd just start up a conversation on a bus or train.

Ridiculous. Just ridiculous.

You know what I'm gonna do just for craps and giggles? I'm gonna spend the next few days sitting in public places, and I'm just gonna start talking to people. And at the gym too - just gonna start talking to the folks next to me.

And then see how they react.

I tried smiling at this Indian girl that was working out next to me in the same class, and she smiled back briefly and moved on. Like seriously lady. Girl was just busy on her phone.

I'm just wondering what this is gonna do to our communities, honestly, more than anything else. Muslims and Pakistanis are so divided anyway, I guess this will just create us to move further apart.

truth of the day, media is driving us
