*MILITARY BUGLE.... *
*....calls were introduced into all sections of the army in the middle of the eighteenth century. The first publication of bugle calls appeared in 1798 and it is possible that some of these were composed by Emperor Franz Joseph who happen to be in Britian at the time.

Re: INTERESTING LIVES and INTERESTING FACTS

A Lesson in history;

It happened every Friday evening, almost without fail, when the sun resembled a giant orange and was starting to dip into the blue ocean.
Old Ed came strolling along the beach to his favorite pier. Clutched in his bony hand was a bucket of shrimp.

Ed walks out to the end of the pier, where it seems he almost has the world to himself. The glow of the sun is a golden bronze now.
Everybody's gone, except for a few joggers on the beach. Standing out on the end of the pier, Ed is alone with his thoughts.... **
**and his bucket of shrimp.

Before long, however, he is no longer alone. Up in the sky a thousand white dots come screeching and squawking, winging their way toward that lanky frame standing there on the end of the pier.

Before long, dozens of seagulls have enveloped him, their wings fluttering and flapping wildly. **Ed stands there tossing shrimp to the hungry birds. As he does, if you listen closely, **
you can hear him say with a smile, "Thank you. Thank you."

In a few short minutes the bucket is empty. But Ed doesn't leave.
He stands there lost in thought, as though transported to another time and place. Invariably, one of the gulls lands on his sea-bleached, weather-beaten hat - an old military hat he's been wearing for years.

When he finally turns around and begins to walk back toward the beach, a few of the birds hop along the pier with him until he gets to the stairs, and then they, too, fly away. And old Ed quietly makes his way down to the end of the beach and on home.

If you were sitting there on the pier with your fishing line in the water, Ed might seem like "a funny old duck," as my dad used to say. Or, "a guy that's a sandwich shy of a picnic," as my kids might say. To onlookers, he's just another old codger, lost in his own weird world, feeding the seagulls with a bucket full of shrimp.

To the onlooker, rituals can look either very strange or very empty. They can seem altogether unimportant ....maybe even a lot of nonsense.
Old folks often do strange things, **
**at least in the eyes of Boomers and Busters.

Most of them would probably write Old Ed off, down there in Florida. That's too bad. They'd do well to know him better.

His full name: Eddie Rickenbacker. He was a famous hero back in World War II. On one of his flying missions across the Pacific, he and his seven-member crew went down. Miraculously, all of the men survived, crawled out of their plane, and climbed into a life raft.

Captain Rickenbacker and his crew floated for days on the rough waters of the Pacific. They fought the sun. They fought sharks. Most of all, they fought hunger. By the eighth day their rations ran out. No food. No water. They were hundreds of miles from land **
**and no one knew where they were.

They needed a miracle. That afternoon they had a simple devotional service and prayed for a miracle. They tried to nap. Eddie leaned back and pulled his military cap over his nose. Time dragged. All he could hear was the slap of the waves against the raft.

Suddenly, Eddie felt something land on the top of his cap. It was a seagull!
Old Ed would later describe how he sat perfectly still, planning his next move. With a flash of his hand and a squawk from the gull, he managed to grab it and wring its neck. He tore the feathers off, and he and his starving crew made a meal - a very slight meal for eight men - of it. Then they used the intestines for bait. With it, they caught fish, which gave them food and more bait......and the cycle continued. With that simple survival technique, they were able to endure the rigors of the sea until they were found and rescued. (after 24 days at sea...)

Eddie Rickenbacker lived many years beyond that ordeal, but he never forgot the sacrifice of that first lifesaving seagull. And he never stopped saying, "Thank you." That's why almost every Friday night he would walk to the end of the pier with a bucket full of shrimp and a heart full of gratitude.

Re: INTERESTING LIVES and INTERESTING FACTS

VALENTINE'S DAY
*Every February, across most of the countries in the World, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. *

*But who is this mysterious saint and why do people celebrate this holiday? *

The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints **
**named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred.

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons **
**where they were often beaten and tortured.

*According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. *

Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.
While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of **
**February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial -- which probably occurred around 270 A.D -- others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to 'christianize' celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

*To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at the sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have *
*been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. *

The priests would then sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification.

*The boys then sliced the goat's hide into strips, dipped them in the sacrificial blood and took to the streets, gently slapping both women and fields of crops with the goathide strips. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed being touched with the hides because it was believed the strips would make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would then each choose a name out of the urn and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. *

*These matches often ended in marriage. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day around 498 A.D. The Roman 'lottery' system for romantic pairing was deemed un-Christian and outlawed. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February -- Valentine's Day -- should be a day for romance. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by *

Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to **
**compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America.

According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. **
**(An estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas.)

Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women. In addition to the United States, Valentine's Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages (written Valentine's didn't begin to appear until after 1400), and the oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum. The first commercial Valentine's Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howland. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, **
**ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap".

In PAKISTAN, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the time the deluge of private TV channels started b*ng it as their commercial product primarily. By the middle of the 2000, it was common for ALL the TV channels in Pakistan to present Valentine Day programs capitalizing on the beautiful female TV stars and handsome/popular male stars to muster as much adverts., as possible giving two hoots to the choice and likes of the (poor and highly disgruntled) TV VIEWERS. **

However, the more closer reality to celebrating VALENTINE'S DAY
for God knows reason--WHY? in Pakistan, are the trendy
ballroom parties like MAY QUEEN BALL etc which always draw
a huge gathering of couples (some stags also!) and slow dancing
as well as Foxtrot, Jive, Remba Semba and Limbo, are mostly the
winners of huge prizes...like return fare to UK and the Far East.
This year's VALENTINE BALL at the Arabian Sea Country Club...
far in the wilderness of National Highway towards Thatta..near the Steel Mill
was a reckoning one..ending around 4 am.

-- HOW TO DO THE HIGHLAND FLING (STEP BY STEP) --

  • HOLD THE LEFT ARM UP AND CURVE TOWARDS THE TOP OF THE HEAD TO CREATE A 'C'.
  • PUT THE RIGHT HAND ON THE HIP WITH THE THUMB POINTING TOWARDS THE GROUND AND THE FINGERS TOWARDS THE BACK.
  • STARTING ON THE LEFT FOOT, WITH THE RIGHT FOOT EXTENDED TO THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE, TAKE A QUARTER-TURN HOP (WHILE ESSENTIALLY REMAINING ON THE SAME-SPOT).
  • BRING THE RIGHT FOOT IN BEHIND THE RIGHT ANKLE.
  • PERFORM ANOTHER QUARTER-TURN HOP ON THE LEFT FOOT, AGAIN EXTENDING THE RIGHT FOOT OUT TO THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE.
  • THEN ANOTHER QUARTER-TURN HOP, BRINGING THE RIGHT FOOT IN FRONT OF THE LEFT CALF WITH THE TOE POINTING DOWN.
  • REPEAT THE PREVIOUS STEPS BUT WITH ARMS AND LEGS IN THE OPPOSITE POSITIONS.
  • END THE DANCE WITH A SLOW AND ELEGANT BOW.

Dancing on numbers like Rock-n-Roll, Remba Semba, Foxtrot,
Jive, Twist and Ballroom Classics...have always been MY weakness
and I enjoyed it much..on various occasions...having also won a few
awards at various dance competitions at Murree, Bhurbun,
Bahrain, Qatar, Abudhabi and of course at Karachi during
MAY QUEEN Balls and at New Year parties.

"A Love Story"

***Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived:
Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others including Love.
One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink,
So all repaired their boats and left.

Love wanted to persevere until the last possible moment. When the
Island was almost sinking, Love decided to ask for help. Richness
Was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, "Richness, can you
Take me with you?" Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot
Of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you."

Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful
Vessel, "Vanity, please help me!" "I can't help you Love. You are
All wet and might damage my boat." Vanity answered.

Sadness was close by so Love asked for help, "Sadness, let me go
With you." "Oh....Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!"

Happiness passed by Love too, but she was so happy that she did
Not even hear when Love called her!

Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come Love, I will take you." It
Was an elder. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that he even
Forgot to ask the elder his name. When they arrived at dry
Land, the elder went his own way.

Love realizing how much he owed the elder and asked Knowledge,
Another elder, "Who helped me?" "It was Time," Knowledge answered.
"Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?" Knowledge smiled
With deep wisdom and answered, ***

"Because, only Time is capable of Understanding how great Love is."

*"A STRONG WOMAN VERSUS A WOMAN OF STRENGTH" *

**A strong woman works out every day to keep her body in shape ...
But a woman of strength kneels in prayer to keep her soul in shape...

A strong woman isn't afraid of anything ...
But a woman of strength shows courage in the midst of her fear...

A strong woman won't let anyone get the best of her ...
But a woman of strength gives the best of her to everyone...

A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future...
A woman of strength realizes life's mistakes can also be God's
blessings and capitalizes on them...

A strong woman walks sure footedly...
But a woman of strength knows God will catch her when she falls...

A strong woman wears the look of confidence on her face...
But a woman of strength wears grace...

A strong woman has faith that she is strong **
enough for the Journey...
But a woman of strength has faith that it is in **
**the journey that she will become strong...

ADHARI POOL

If you ever happen to be in Bahrain, do not
miss a visit to its 100 years old
ADHARI POOL

which has now gone dry....
But till 1984, the pool surrounded
by a deserted park, had sweet water
base of which met the sea.....some miles
nearby. There were LARGE fish...who would
be friendly and would not disturb you if you swam

in that pool. I did during a picnic in 1978.

It is said that Bahrain..originally WAADI-E-DILMUN
converted to WAADI-E-ANDALUS...followed by
PEARL divers paradise.....and finally shaping
up as a peaceful island BAHRAIN.

The ADHARI POOL dates back to 100 years
when the Arab Merchants use to pass
by on Camel backs--would stop at ADHARI POOL
for water intake and stock...

ADHARI POOL has now been developed into
a huge park but the particularly pool area
has been maintained as an archive...though

no water in the pool.

WORLD’s LARGEST HORSE!

***Measuring at 19 hands and 2 inches, Digger is used to looking down on the world as Britain’s largest horse. At just 4 years old — in equine terms a teenager — the burly Clydesdale is eating and growing his way into becoming contender for the world’s record largest steed. ***

In fact, Digger is so brawny that his handler Lisa McFarlane has difficulties to record his exact size. With his head up he measures close to 9 feet tall. Horses are conventionally measured in 4-inch ‘hands’ from the ground to the withers — the highest point of the back just before the animal’s neck — for Digger, that’s about 6 feet 6 inches.
He measures 8 feet 5 inches (3.05 meters) from his ears to the top of his tail, and his hooves are 15 inches (35 centimeters) across.
***Digger is now ‘neck and neck’ with Cracker, a shire horse in Lincolnshire measuring 19 hands and 2 inches in 2005. Tina, a shire from Tennessee, was dubbed tallest horse ***
***in the world last year, standing in at 20 hands. ***

The floppy-fringed Shire horse was an orphan and didn’t have the best of starts in life. He was taken in to International League for the Protection of Horses’ Belwade Farm in Aboyne, Scotland, shortly before Christmas after his owners could no longer cope to look after him due to their serious health problems.
***Despite his former intricacies, Digger has grown strong and healthy, weighing 1,980 pounds (900 kilos), eating 3 times more than an ordinary horse, and drinking between 20 to 25 gallons of water a day. ***

***He devours 42 to 55 pounds (19 to 25 kilos) of food a day, including 3 servings of cereal grain, and chomps through a 4 foot bale of hay every 2 days. Treats include his daily morning chocolate muffin, plus gifts from visitors — about 4 apples or carrots per day. ***
***Digger is covered at night to keep cozy with a 7 foot 9 inch long blanket. The strapping stallion is so sizeable that has ***
***to be transported by a specialized truck. ***
***Farm manager Eileen Gillen said, “He is the largest horse we have ever had. He is the equivalent of a growing teenage boy — never out of the fridge. Heaven knows what size he is going to end up.” ***
***Though some may find Digger’s size daunting ***
and intimidating, he’s made best friends at the farm with Sweep
***— a 12 year old mini Shetland pony who stands merely 34 inches (85 centimeters) tall, ***and can walk straight under Digger’s belly.
Clydesdale horses originated from the valley of the River Clyde and developed as a breed in the early 1700’s.
They have typically been used as work horses on farms and for long distance haulage, due to their magnitude in size and muscular power.
The average Clydesdale’s life span is between 20 to 25 years.

WINSTON S. CHURCHILL

A story of Winston S. Churchill----told by Gertrude Atherton;

"Shortly after he left the Conservative side of the House
(of Commons) for the liberal, he was taking a certain young
woman down to dinner, when she looked up to him coquettishly,

and remarked with the audacity of her kind;
"There are two things I don't like about you Mr. Churchill."
"And what are they?"
"Your new politics and mustache."
"My dear madam," he replied suavely, "pray do not
disturb yourself. You are not likely to come in contact with either."
