Re: Intellectual show offs.
well it is a give and take world. believers believe they are better than atheists. atheists believe they are better than believers. it is all a matter of respect. if you can get away with saying things like "atheism is a disease", where is the incentive for atheists to not ridicule your faith?
..or hilltop.
scary......
Bulls eye Mirch para.
There are people out there who logically question Gods existence and would acknowledge/appreciate valid arguments against their beleifs.
And then there is class of people that Mirch para is talking about, those who are complete idiots and yet try to play intellectual.
you dont sound like an iconoclast with that post.
scary......
that is the zoroastrian way, read about the tower of silence.or dokhma sometime.

Re: Intellectual show offs.
"Thank God i m atheist" Oh Lord! Oh lord!
Very few desi people know that "yeah kiss churia ka naam hay" therefore I have not come across an agnostic desi show off yet.
Don't mean to be rude but aren't you showing off here? I happen to know few agnostics and yes there are desis among them. Any body can be a jerk and a showoff be it an atheist or religious person, but I don't agree with your generalization here that desis who denounce their born in religion are showoffs and think that theist people are stupid, in fact this thread shows quite the opposite.
Anyways, ive never met an atheist desi.
I recall that in the eighth grade through metric I had difficulty reconciling religion with what I was learning about science. Logically religion did not make sense and there were many questions that were impossible to answer. I was having trouble believing in religion and could not discuss this matter with my parents because I was concerned about how they would respond.
Even today I recognize those questions to remain difficult. I have come to accept there is much that falls outside logic and what science knows today, and a belief in a divine entity comes more from instinct than rationalization. And I suppose for some people this belief comes from danda ;-)
I do not think an atheism is a psychiatric disease, nor a fad. How I feel about a person depends on the person's conduct more than the belief system. And for those who believe, I think what one believes is more important than simply claiming to be with a religion; I might think better of a person who identifies as being spiritual and believing in a God and about treating others as one wishes to be treated than about a person who identifies self as a follower of more prevalent religions but his actions defy the spirit of religion.

Never knew that Atheism's a religion/faith. I think Atheism itself is a mockery of all the religions.
Re: Intellectual show offs.
where is the mockery of religions in being an atheist, hareem? if you believe in God and someone believes there is no God, are you both necessarily mocking each others beliefs?
bebo and anokhaYaar - very refreshing to see intelligent and independent posts like yours on GS. please do post more.

Atheists have nothing to offer, all their morals and their so called ethics have been taken from Religious orders that believe in God.
Tell me one thing good that Atheists have brought that is not found in other religions?
Re: Intellectual show offs.
you are confusing morality with religiosity, which is another discussion. i'm curious about why you keep accusing atheists of mockery.

Because of statements like that.
Ps: Please do answer my question that I asked in previous post.
Re: Intellectual show offs.
hmmm
1-A certain group of people..from a certain country...with a certain level of education, always say "I don't believe in God"
Yet they follow the their forefathers pattern of being uncomfortable with a certain religion.
(if no religion then why deamon-izing ppl on the base or religion?)
2-Some time its genuine..at certain age kids with half decent brains stop believing in religion's "version" given to them by their parents.
They usually perceive it again at their own terms.
So you cant really say what is going on in person's head unless you know them/their-environment really well.
PlayStation:: As much as we like to believe religion is not AS divine(for most ppl). Its a delicate balance of social beliefs given by our families. One little thing can throw any child off that delicate balance.
my 2 cents :)

i don't think you should be offended by that statement, hareem. morality is not something that was discovered by religious people, or only exists in religious societies. religions do come with their prescriptions for morality though.
as for what atheists have to offer over believers, it is not a matter of offerings. it is a matter of what makes sense to you.

Agree with you Queer, great to hear some considered opinions like yours. Most of the popular religions in the world today are relatively recent compared with the histories of human civilization.
As for the question of not meeting any atheist/agnostic desis. The customs that were exclusively of the religious right in the 70s/80s have now become main stream since the surkha left dissipated. We need a resurrection of the political left in Pakistan to counter this ideological creep towards the right underway for the last 2 decades. Atheism and Agnosticism can be found in the works of Pakistani intellectuals if you read them. Even Persian intellectuals in the 13th-14th century reached philosophical existentialism long before Kierkegaard or Sartre/Camus.

How does Queer stating that you are confusing morality with religion equate to atheists mocking religion?

I am not convinced your assumption is correct that ethics and morals can be derived only from religion.
Regarding your question about what atheists have brought, I am not here to make a case that they are saviors of the world. Instead, I am here to make a case that they are not by default horrible people.
When you ask what atheists have brought you avoid answering the question asked to you; why do you feel atheists mock other religions? Is there any rational basis behind your feelings or are you simply threatened by those who hold a different view?
To clarify, I do not identify as a defender of atheists and am not opposed to religion but I am opposed to closed-mindedness.
lolllll

Atheism does have a basis except that it borrows and takes from the religious wisdoms rebrands it as morality and denies God. It offers nothing of it's own. I'm still waiting for the good that Atheism has given that is not found in major world religions.

Because he is willing to lie to defend Atheism yet lieing is obviously immoral.
It is not an assumption that ethics and morals come from religion, name one good thing in these areas that has not come from religion and I will accept your claim.
