Bhai, I am a jahil. You are asking for one verse, I need to read or listen to a scholar for the every verse. Sorry, cant give you one example.
Could you explain "proper self study" because I am really confuse. "Proper self study" to me means reading the work of other "SCHOLARS". No offense but the way you use the phrase, "proper self study" sounds like a "self revelation" to me. "aate hain gaib se ye mazaamin khayal mein" kind of thing
Gudia Behan, those translations were done by Maulvis of some era, right? That is exactly what my point is. We need some scholars (alive, dead, in person or through writings) who help us to understand Shariah.
Can I ask you and USR.. one question. If you are performing Namaz (Salat) and you make a mistake, under what conditions Sijda-e-Sahaw is enough and when is that you have to repeat the salat?
Could you answer that above question, just by reading Quran with good footnotes or will you go to Mufti Sahib to get the answer. I brought up this specific question because USR.. said "If I say Islam says pray to Allah SWT, what is so complicated about it that requires a scholar to teach you when you can learn how to pray just by reading the correct literature". And again, any other literature is written by a maulvi, anyway. And how will you decide which literature is correct?
You are absolutely correct on many points. But even if we do allow scholars some room to teach us, that does not mean we are REQUIRED to accept anything and everything any self-named maulana asks us to accept.
You can ask different scholars and each will tell you a slightly different way to pray. So who do you listen to?
Gudia, I agree with you that we get different opinions. We should stick with renowned Ulema, not with a self named one (as you mentioned very rightly). Second, when we find one then we should stick with that and do go to find another opinion.
Your point is very well taken but that should not stop us from going to Ulema's to seek guidance. Not everone is qualified to pass a fatwa and that includes ourselves too. Instead of doing a google search on finding answers, we should go to the expert.
Islam is staright forward and easy religion (your point and USR..' point) and I agree. Its life which is difficult. Instead of doing google search to find islamic answers to problems like talaq, wiraasat, banking and what not, we can go to an expert.
The verses you posted above are pretty clear to me. What conclusion of meaning did you reach by reading other sources of knowledge? To me, its pretty self-explanatory. Don't be decieved by people who really truly are disbelievers.

You know I think we are arguing for no reason. We both seem to agree on the same things. So I back tracked on what was it that I had pointed out in your post and it was about you saying “We first believe then learn”. I think this was the point which I was actually differing on when I stated that there is a difference between following a prophet of Allah SWT and following a scholar. What I had meant was the example you were giving of the companions blindly following what the Prophet SAW (which is where you got the Believe first and then learn) is quite different than believing the scholars of today first and then learning what it actually was that you followed from them. Ofcourse there are a select few fundamentals that require us to believe first because with our limited perception we just cannot learn completely about them.
