What are the various ways , the fennel seed is used in your home and kitchen ?

don’t use it much, but when I was breast feeding I used to drink sauf vala pani ppl say baby ko gas nhi ho gi, even some ppl give it to babies as well.

abhi I only use it in chicken achar.

I don’t like it much

I usually add it to pulao. Before starting with the pulao, I put about one teaspoon in a cup with water and put it aside. Do all the pulau stuff and when it’s time to do the dumm, I sprinkle some of the saunf water on it before. It’s something my mom always does, so I do it too.

I don’t like it much but in my parents’ house,my abu goes through packs of saunf like anything.He pops a teaspoon of it in mouth after all meals and just randomly.He basically uses it,alongwith green cardamom as mouth fresheners.

Nihari, achar, to cook vegetables such as turai ! Even good with simple curry! One of the spice of the “punj puri” - like in aalo turkari for with halwa puri!

wow I am amazed its not a much liked spice. I love it. I use it in my tea , Biryani , korma and any dry veggie salans like aloo sabzi etc

Also I use it in my cereal occasionally , cookies and flavoured bread .

I use it in aloo and tindora dry sabzis.
Never made it myself, but it’s also used in making thandaai - a cool refreshing summer drink.

Use it in biryani masala and pilao - both times it’s in powdered form. Erm…sometimes in Italian cooking…like soup or tomato based sauces. It adds such a lovely flavor…but u have to be careful not to overdo it otherwise it tastes weird lol. Use it in green tea sometimes and have used it when i was bfeeding my son.

use it quite a bit in sabzi like bhindi and squash
always need saunf for pulao and for my pasta sauce
we often have a home made mix (like mukwas) with shredded coconut as saunf is considered a digestive aid…

Only yesterday my French colleague proudly gave me a French candy and it was made of saunf!

Saunf powder if added to chicken curry gives a very very good taste.

English people are very fond of eating green fennel!

I was given some gurh recently, it is peppered liberally with fennel. Not sure quite what to do with it.

How do you add saunf in palao?

^ Either when making the yakhni, add it in with the other aromatics (i have all those things in a small cotton cloth that i thrown in)…or add powdered saunf like maybe 1/4th teaspoon when u are frying the onions (just before adding chicken, yakhni and rice).

when I do tarka for daal. I melt the butter in the add pan , add a few grains of fennel seeds then fry the garlic.

I add the daal in and it makes the daal flavour pop.
