Inglis Music

This may sound like a rather strange request but here it goes… I need help from you guys on what sort of music a typical British/American my age (18) would listen to.

Thing is I don’t have very many white friends, my social circle is limited to people of South Asian descent and although I was born in this country, I’m not from Bradford or Southall and haven’t spent more than a few summer vacations in Pakistan I’m overtly Desified, whether it’s food or movies I’ve no taste for Western culture whatsoever, I think the only thing Western about me is the way I dress and being able to speak English other than that I’m only really into Desi (Pakistani/Indian) stuff, the only music I ever listen to is South Asian; mostly Bhangra tracks, Desi pop, Hindi film tracks, Paki Rock and occasionally classical Ghazal and spiritual Qawwaali stuff but English music gives me headache.

Now my problem is whenever I’m around white folks like at work where there’s no Desi’s, I always feel the need to suppress the Desi part of identity, I don’t want a lecture on being proud of ones roots because I very much I’m but we’re in their country and 8/10 of them don’t appreciate our culture except for curry of course even that they find hard to admit.

Anyway I recently met this white girl through a friend and she’s interested in me, I like her but the only problem is all my dates so far have been South Asian so I don’t know what to expect and I’m worried about the culture gap and can’t use the same icebreakers I can with a Desi girl, now to bridge that gap I figured it would help having similar tastes in entertainment so I thought I’d ask you lot about what different music genres there are, names of different artists/albums etc.?

My mates sometimes listen to rap and r’n’b and dance but I’ve only a very vague idea of what these sound like, I wouldn’t dare ask my friends because they’ll probably just laugh, the good thing with Internet is you can say the most ridiculous of things and the people reading it don’t know you.

Re: Inglis Music

haha are you serious, just be yourself. Why do you need music as an icebreaker (oh, you're 18) - talk to her and find out what interests her.

Re: Inglis Music

Thanks that helped. :sarcasm: “be yourself” <-I knew somebody would say that, I can’t I’m really too Desi for my own good, I need to change myself because it’d be nice to expereience other cultures or at the least I should develop a taste for the one I live in.

Re: Inglis Music

Im sure plenty of people hear will give you the info you are looking for but I just wanted to say that you should talk to her about you and find out about her....

Shes probably interested in your background (because its different) and if you do talk to her about things you dont know you will end up looking like a fool.

Indian inspired music is rather popular at the moment so she will have heard it.... you can talk about that.

You say "8/10 of them don’t appreciate our culture except for curry of course even that they find hard to admit. "

I disagree with this, you will come across as interesting because you are different and if she isnt interested in you and what makes you perhaps it means that you should, well.....

Re: Inglis Music

Well, I dont think you should make a concerted effort to "change", rather keep yourself open to other cultures, make other friends and try to talk to them about what interests them and gets them going - you'll find that they aren't too different from you. Reminds me, at uni we had those desi kids who went to desi-only schools and couldn't really get out of their own cliques - maybe they were scared, and theres nothing to fear - be confident and listen to what they have to say. Go out for coffee or drinks with some goras, they aren't aliens - everyones human, everyone wants love...ok ill shut up now.

Re: Inglis Music

^^^ She is right...if you try to change yourself into something youre not you'll end up looking like an idiot..sorry!

Re: Inglis Music

Im sure he just wants to culture himself.

Re: Inglis Music

Thanx kurriyey. :flower1:

The rest of you can Paich-Kass yourselves (only joking).

Re: Inglis Music

the 18 year olds around me listen to it. hip hop, rock, and the mix between those. the best course you could go through right now is listening to the radio stations that play that stuff. i'm sure where ever you are there is one station dedicated to rock, one to hip hop, and one to pop stuff. just keep switching between them to get an idea of what is around you. also, those music channels...watch the videos on em. another way to get an idea of the gora music. (with vidoes atleast you'll know who're the people making em)

my personal favs at this moment are white stripes, coldplay, foo fighters, the killers, umm...i forget what else i have on my cd.

Re: Inglis Music

what does that mean?

Re: Inglis Music

You are 18....hmmm...let me see what the manual says:

1) Assume the facade of being a coconut (brown on the outside, white on the inside)
2) Pretend to be interested in her
3) Proceed to have sex with her (caveat: In order to avoid statutory rape, plesae exercise caution to find out her real age and make sure it conforms to the age of consent)
4) Continue with this practice until you are tired of her
5) Exuent (exit)
6) Repeat procedures 1), 2), 3) 4) & 5), till you are skilled and ready to get married
7) Go home and ask Ammi to find you a bhola bhala virgin girl
8) Repeat procedures 2), 3), and 4).

Before you at upon this, make sure you read Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal." It's a necessary prerequisite.

Re: Inglis Music

Khumar, good idea thanks, can you or anyone else recommend some good channels/radiostations on Sky Digital UK?

lazy_dazy, paich-kass=screw driver :stuck_out_tongue:

dope, emmm ok thanks :konfused: by the way it’s not bhola bhala, it’s bholi bhali virgin girl, you remind me of that dude in that tv serial on geo tv, I’ve already got a bholi bhali mangetar in my village in Pakistan, I was chatting to her earlier on msn. Qismat ki baat hai kab milti hai, mere to naseeb hi phootey hain because everything just had to fcuk up right at the last minute.

Re: Inglis Music

I don’t think she will mind, not that I’ve told her, she knows what my other nick on here is and she says she’s been on here a few times but is not registered so she probably has a good idea of my kartoot from on here.

Gori’s and even most Desi girls in the UK are not love/marriage material, she’s the only queen of my heart and she knows it.

“Gopiyaan” taare hain chaand hai “Raadha”, phir kiyun ho usko vishwaas aadha? “Gopiyaan” aani jaani hai “Raadha” to mann ki raani hai.
