BANGALORE, India (AFP) -** India’s pace spearhead Javagal Srinath has retired from cricket after failing to recover from a troubesome right knee.

“It is time to go,” the 34-year-old told reporters on Tuesday after it became evident the knee injury will sideline him for the Test series in Australia starting next month.**

The Indian team for the Australian tour will be named here on Thursday.

Srinath last played for India in the World Cup final at Johannesburg in March, but opted out of subsequent matches to recover from the injury sustained during the tournament.

Srinath missed this season’s home Test matches against New Zealand and the ongoing limited-overs series also featuring world champions Australia.

He said last week that he would quit the game if he did not recover in time to make the tour of Australia.

“There is no point hanging around if I am not fit,” Srinath said. “I have no regrets, in fact I am happy that Indian fast bowling is in good health with the likes of Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra around.”

The Karnataka bowler, who made his Test debut on the Australian tour in 1991, claimed 236 wickets in 67 Tests at an average of 30.49.

He was India’s second most successful fast bowler after stepping into the shoes of the legendary Kapil Dev, who retired in 1994 with a then world record tally of 434 Test wickets.

Srinath also played in 229 one-day internationals in which he took an Indian record of 315 wickets, including 16 in the last World Cup.

His best Test figures were 8-86 against Pakistan in the Asian Test championship match at Calcutta in 1999, but it was not enough to prevent the arch-rivals from winning the match.

The Mysore-based engineer, who turned out for Gloucestershire and Leicestershire in separate stints in English county cricket, had been a reluctant starter for India over the last two years.

Srinath announced his retirement after the tour of the West Indies in April 2002, but was persuaded by Indian captain Sourav Ganguly to play in the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka in September.

He also missed the Test series in New Zealand in December, but was a roaring success at the World Cup in South Africa by helping India win eight matches in a row to reach the final.

To be a world class athlete while pursuing professional education is really something. All the best in the future, Sri.

I don't know but he never impressed me by his bowling or his personality. Same for Kapil :D

Ashish and Zaheer have class like Pakistani or Aussie fast bowlers.

He is one guy who i realy admire..i think he was a better fast bowler than Kapil Dev....he used to beat the bat so often and was very unlucky on many occeasons...in 1996 he improved alot...but did not realy stay the same for long. To me the best Indian fast Bowler Yet.

You should be hanged for saying that! :2guns:

a sad day for cricket indeed (sarcasm intended)

Was he still playing?.

If he was, may I know WHY ?

chalo gaya yeh bhi:D

bye:wave:…

He was great contributor to Indian cricket. Perhaps another legend for Indian cricket.

Man, even his fans were waiting for his retirement.
Well, good luck to him.

I think most of you have been harsh at Srinath....i think he was major contributor to Indian team and had a good career and he deserves recognition for that.
I have seen him make many good batsman strugle with the new ball he had quite good control and he had an Odd very good ball specially the one that leaves the left handed batsmen.

I always considered Srinath a very under-rated bowler. His shyness and his preference for maintaining a low profile did not exactly help his case either. Let us say, he did not have the temperament to back up his bowling skills. He was too nice/too modest and possibly too educated (note that he is a computer engineer) to be an aggresive fast bowler at the international level. He showed some potential in batting too in the early stages of his career but never quite delivered on a consistent basis in that department for some reason.

Having said all that, I have always maintained that he had better bowling repertoire than even Kapil Dev and ofcourse knew when to call it quits unlike that Jaat.

He will be missed.
