I****ndia’s hospital strikes continue**

Medical services in hospitals across India continue to be disrupted by a strike by doctors and students over an affirmative action plan. Medical staff angry at plans to boost opportunities for people born into lower castes. The Indian prime minister has set up a panel of senior ministers to resolve the issue. Under the plans, half of state-funded professional college places would go to lower caste students. The move has drawn fire from medical students as well as business leaders and teachers who say it will lead to a drop of standards. The strike has affected services in state-run hospitals with many patients being turned away and forced to opt for more expensive treatment at private hospitals.

‘Expediency’

Demonstrations which began in the capital, Delhi, have spread to the state of Punjab in the north, Gujarat and Maharashtra in the west and Orissa in the east. At the main teaching hospital in Delhi, 100 students have been on hunger strike for three days, with some saying they are prepared to fast until death. The plans would make 50% of college places lower caste only The Congress party-led government says that nearly 50% of places in state-funded professional colleges should go to lower or backward castes, as they are called in India. But critics complain it is an act of political expediency as much as social engineering, he says. The BBC’s Sanjoy Majumder in Delhi says the government is unlikely to back down since the move has the support of traditionally disadvantaged low-caste communities who are large in number and politically influential. A team of senior cabinet ministers is now looking at ways to resolve the issue - one possibility is increasing the number of places in professional colleges to match the increased affirmative action quota. Despite laws banning discrimination, India’s lower castes remain at the bottom of society and are poorly represented in major professions.

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low cast

So answer to that is reservation based on caste. No!!!!
Reservation is discriminatory. It allows to exploit caste in the society. If at all any reservation is needed should be economy based than caste based.
I am actually very much against reservation. It kills merit. The system will spew out ordinary graduates and professionals. It will kill the system itself. It will not help the poor also. Those people who have already enjoyed reservation will get it still and the needy will still live in the slums.

Re: India’s hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

The need is to improve the basic education infrastructure. Reservation has done no good in the last 50 years.
Prime Minister’s advisory body votes against extension of reservation in higher education

Re: India’s hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

Upper castes are butchering low castes in anger at affirmative action policies.

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

SILLY is a waste of time, in a country like India he can always keep picking news and keep posting. He rarely argues........ Just puts cuts and paste.......
He has a biased motive.......... if goes after US/ UK/ Germany/ Pakistan any country he can find 101 such reports every day........ he has chosen India..........
Lets keep putting our opinion and not get overawed by this guys... sheer focus on negatives of India.....

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low cast

^ its silly to take Silly seriously. We had no topic where we could discuss this thing, and our own nicole was not opening one, so i thought post it in this thread our opinion and ignore Silly's comments.:)

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

There is a great agenda going forward about Social Index. Where everybody gets a Social Index based on social status and that gives a handicap to person..
This sounds better than just a simple reservation system...

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

when you and your cohorts stop doing the same, only then will you no longer see your counterparts on the "other side".

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

Show me the threads buddy....... I don't even remembering starting a thread.....
The many other threads started are related to World Affairs, while most of the SILLY's thread are very focussed on India's internal issues......
I hope you understand......

Just as added point......
Is abusive language while making a point has become norm here.......

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

Dear Rahul & others..

What suggestions do you have to break the monopoly of upper casts at hi-profile institutes in India?

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low cast

Welcome back Anjjan.
The only way one can break the monopoly is through giving facilities for the students from lower income group to study. That is by providing scholerships, by providing free books or atleast subsidised books. The scholarship should be sufficient to support the whole family, then only peaple from poor background will be encouraged to take to studies.
Reservation is not helping the needy. In IITs i have seen there is something called preperatory caurse for SC/ ST students. This is the course for those students who have got into the institution on reservation but their standards are far below the regular catagory students and given one year to make that up and then join in the 1st year of engeneering studies. Most of the guys who get in are sons and daughters of rich SC St families. This clearly defeats the porpose of reservation.

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

in one of the other threads, i mentioned that i support reservation in its current form. And i still stand by it. But i am against it being extended to private companies.

Your question is not apt. There is monopoly of talented people at high-profile institutes of india, caste has got nothing to do with it.

But if the government includes reservation on the basis of economy as vinesh mentioned it, then it's point to be noted. Then entire reservation policy has to be changed which i dont see it happening. So i stick to the first point, i made here.

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

sorry narayan, no offence to you....i disagree with it.

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

If there are no reservations for backward areas or castes how will they progress.

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

BTW which upper castes are dominating high profile jobs and institutions.

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

Right....correct

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

"high profile" jobs is dominated by talented and hard working people, atleast in most of the cases. nobody cares of any kind of backwardness here.

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

I will just summarize what i am trying to say.....let this reservation be there the way it is. But dont extend it further. It will certainly harm in the long term.

Re: India's hospital strikes continue - opposition to affirmative action for low castes

Let me clear one thing....that in India some institutes provide stipends to economically backwards but this facility is well manipulated by the rich and heavy weights of different sectors.

In private sector 20 to 40 % seats are already occupied by the backwards but the highest post these people have reached is up to the manager’ (marketing) level and nothing more. Backwards are no where in the management in private sectors.

I am waiting to understand if the opponents of reservation policy have any concrete suggestions so that the monopoly of the uppers can be challenged.
