Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims
Friday, January 18, 2008

MUMBAI: A powerful Islamic group in India is asking Muslims to boycott products of a top Indian business group if its owner does not apologise for hosting author Salman Rushdie on a brief holiday this week.

Rushdie stayed at the plush bungalow of the Godrej family while visiting Mumbai. But the Godrejs’ hospitality has angered the All-India Ulema Council. “We really hope Mr Godrej realises the hurt he has caused us and says sorry for it,” Maulana Mehmood Daryabadi, a council official, said. “Otherwise, we are asking Muslims all over to boycott his company’s products.” reuters

Re: Hindustani tycoon hosts the Devil, angers Muslims

Taleban idiots telling a Hindu what and how to do things according to Islam; or the Muslims of India (who dont have much purchasing power to begin with) wont purchase his items/merchandise.

And im sure Godrej is thinking: "What the ****? Its not like you buffoons can afford it before anyways!"

Re: Hindustani tycoon hosts the Devil, angers Muslims

^your reply makes no sense whatsoever.
Even a very open minded Muslim will never accept and respect Rushdie for what harm he has done to our religion. It has nothing to do with Taliban here.

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

why did the mods change the title of the thread from the devil to salman rushdie?

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

Gentlemen,

Exactly what did Rushdie do to harm Islam? Besides print stupid fables in a book that didnt sell until Islamists raised their voices.

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

Godrej need not budge to such demands. He is free to call whoever he wants. Besides, salman rusdie has many things to say against even hinduism(i think) in his book!. so what's the problem?..there is no problem even if had said only against islam!!!...He can come to india whenever he wants. Moreover, quran doesn't have good things to say about the gods and idolatory practised by pagan hindus. Should quran be banned as it hurts the sentiments of some other faith?..definitely NO. Anybody is free to preach what they want.

Re: Hindustani tycoon hosts the Devil, angers Muslims

No, a very open minded Muslim would respect other peoples' opinions, including the right of authors to express themselves freely and for people to decide who they invite into their homes without threat of boycoctt They would also realize the damage to Islam was done by the reaction of some Muslims, not by Rushdie.

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

Angers muslims? Umm, i'm muslim and i'm not angry. Stop spreading lies about my emotions please.

Re: Hindustani tycoon hosts the Devil, angers Muslims

Thank you, very much. The right to literary freedom and the freedom of expression should be given to all people, not just those to believe they're correct.

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

thats great buddy. Listen to what others have to say, don't like it ignore it or counter with similar arguments against him/her.

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

:k: Very well Said… God Bless these Mullahs..

Re: Hindustani tycoon hosts the Devil, angers Muslims

Acha then you are one of a kind maybe.
Like you are one of a kind on many other issues regarding Islam, Muslims, Pakistan and the count goes on. Joining with many others who have left their notes behind in this thread (to my surprise actually)...these days who best can insult ones religion is best for the vvip status. This is how people change in this very world. Good to see!

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

Godrej has a right to invite anybody and the AIUC leader has a right to call for boycott of Godrej products. I am just surprised that the latter hasn't realized how many muslims work in Godrej businesses.

As somebody pointed out, the Satanic Verses would have been long forgotten as a c grade work long ago but for the hue and cry created by the fundamentalists. I tried reading it but found it badly written, lacking any literary value and frankly a waste of time. So stopped after about 30%.

Re: Hindustani tycoon hosts the Devil, angers Muslims

Anger at Rushdie's rubbish is common muslim sentiment, and has nothing to do with Taleban.
Besides, it's the first I've heard of Taleban in Bharat. Extremism is Bharat is one thing, but there are no Taleban there.

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

My question to all the hindus here..why do they get provoked and start internet wars when someone expresses their opinions against their religion if they are supporting Salman Rushdie so much thens they should also let people here in this forum express their opinions about Hinduism. Secondly, How would you people feel if i draw pictures of Hanuman, Rama, shiva etc with weapons in their hands..and standing in Hideous poses, do i have the right to do just because i say its my opinion, you all seem to be very liberal and open minded.

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

teelobhain,

Expressing our displeasure, dislike, disapproval and disgust is one thing. All of us have a right to do that. But what happens beyond such expression is what different.

In the case Rushdie, issuing a fata to murder him is against the law and wrong.

AIUC asking a private citizen to apologize for hosting him is ok as long as they do that without resorting to violence or disturbing peace.

You do have a right to draw any picture - now if you come and thrust it in front of us, then you would be in the wrong.

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

Our dearest MF hussain has done t he same thing. he drawed naked pictures of hindu gods. There were few protest against him but 100000 times lower level than danish cartoon incident.

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

^
The support Mr. Hussain got from fellow Muslims was next to nill. Once again, contrast that with the danish cartoon incident...

Re: Indian tycoon hosts Salman Rushdie, angers Muslims

no yaar..i am not contrasting. What I meant is its better to ignore such ppl rather than coming out on street and burning things.

Re: Hindustani tycoon hosts the Devil, angers Muslims

That right is never an absolute...and neccessarily must go with the honesty, if not the responsibility, to face whatever consequences arise from such "free" expression.

Muslims need show Mr. Rushdie no respect, nor even respect what he has written, nor even support the idea that he had every right to express what he did. To suggest we do is tantamount to allowing Mr. Rishdie the right to poke us in the preverbal eye, and then also giving him the right to tell us how we should react in response.
