There’s a chance Shahid Afridi will be back in the side for Test series. Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib Malik are not Test Cricketers. I think it will come to Azhar Mehmood and Afridi to be our Sixth bowler.
We’ll have to wait and see how Afridi performs on domestic circuit.
Afridi eyes India tour, to appear in Quaid Trophy
KARACHI: Pakistan’s exciting young all-rounder Shahid Afridi will return home on February 1 to qualify for national selection against India by appearing in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy competition for Karachi.
Afridi, who turns 24 in March, told ‘The News’ from South Africa on Wednesday that he was keen to play against India and had decided to terminate his contract with South African provincial side Griqualand West.
“I have enjoyed the experience of playing in South Africa this season. But for me nothing is greater than playing for Pakistan,” he added.
**Afridi who has an excellent record of 780 runs at an average of 32.50 with 21 wickets in 14 Tests said he had spoken to chief selector Wasim Bari and had been told he would have to play in the Quaid Trophy to be considered for selection against India.
“I had no hesitation in calling up the Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) secretary Siraj-ul-Islam Bukhari and informing him I should be considered for Karachi in the coming tournament,”** he added.
Afridi, out of the Pakistan team since last year’s World Cup despite having played 176 One-day Internationals with 3887 runs with three hundreds and 22 fifties and 131 wickets with 65 catches, recently captained the Pakistan ‘A’ side in the triangular tournament in India.
**“I am pumped up to prove myself worthy of a place in the Pakistan side again. And if the selectors want me to come and show my form and fitness on the domestic circuit I am willing to do it.”
“But my only request to the selection committee is please take into serious consideration performances on the domestic circuit and give fair chance to those performing well,”** he added.
Afridi, who has been a thorn in the side of the Indian team in the many matches he has played against them including a match-winning hundred in the Chennai Test of the 1999 tour, said playing against India at home would be a dream coming true for him.
Afridi, who last week struck a blazing 72 from 32 balls for his South African side, said he believed he had a place in the Pakistan test and One-day squad. “And I aim to prove that in the coming weeks.”
The youngster stands to lose over $20,000 in earnings because of terminating his contract with Griqualand West.
