It happened to a friend of mine… back in hs, we were getting off the bus and the relatively aged anglosaxon driver was saying “Bye” to the gorey, “something asian” to the asians, he said “Salam-a-laikum” to me and goes “Namaste” to my paki friend… man was she annoyed
Well I don't mind if people ask if I'm Indian. It's just a question and in most cases the skin color or other features give away that we're probably desi. What bothers me is that they refuse to acknowledge that we're an independent country and have been for the past 60 years.
^ u dont live in australia warna u should see the reaction an aussie would give if u call 'em british... particularly if they're reminded of their convict ancestors :D
so i guess we're not the only ones who have to deal with this :)
It is the same thing. We're generally the same race and ethnicities (barring south and east India). An invisible law drawn by warring nations trying to separate the same land does NOT make us different people.
Neither do notions of religious difference. We're all the same.
The more you try to label people, the further you break them into smaller and smaller groups, until you end up alone.
^ If you're looking at it in terms of the fact that we're all human beings, then yes, I agree. We are the same. However, when it comes to race (which in this case, it has, because the person(s) asked me if I was Indian) I just think that Pakistan should atleast be addressed as it's own country instead of just grouping it back with India. That basically just tells us that the last 60 years of our country's history is absolutely meaningless. Clearly we are different people because we could not even coexist (which is rather shameful, but the truth nonetheless) in the same country.

Again, I don't mind if someone asks me if I'm Indian. I tell them I'm Pakistani. No biggy. What gets me is that people say Pakistan and India are the same thing. If they were really the same thing, then Pakistan would have never fought for independence. =]
Me: Nah man I'm Pakistani.
Indian: Oh yea same thing. =)
NO, crackerjack. It's not the same thing.
There's a lot of Indians in the area that I live in. I'm not prejudiced against them or any of that nonsense - I have a handful of Indian pals. But on countless occasions when I have come across an Indian and they feel inclined to ask me if I'm Indian, and I've responded that I'm Pakistani, some will say "oh yea same thing". I appreciate the effort they are making to mend the broken relationship between Indians in Pakistanis, but I think that for having our forefathers fight and die for our country and eventually winning our independence and becoming a seperate nation, the least they could do is acknowledge the fact that Pakistan is not the "same thing" as India. Our culture is nearly the same but our principles (Pakistani's being based on Islamic teachings) are very different and it is that what truly defines a person.
So, no. It's not the same thing.
I can understand that u may feel offended being called an indian. But the reason that you give are very childish. YouR forefathers did not get independence from India, rather they got it from British. Indians fought among themselves to divide it. Pakistan got independence 1 day earlier than India, so actually it is India who is independent of Pakistan.
And there are as many muslims in India as in Pakistan. Hence ur muslim thing is a little far fetched.

interesting way of looking at it, never thought of it that way! :)

oh for the love of god!!! this is the 4th time I'm repeating this:
I am not offended by people asking me if I'm Indian. It's okay if they ask. I don't mind it. It's just a question. I respond and tell them I'm Pakistani. No harm done.
And ratio-wise (people to land) India doesn't have as many Muslims as Pakistan. That is the main cause of Pakistan's independence. Because the Muslims and the Hindus were going at eachother. But anyways, I can see this is going off on a tangent. All I'm asking is that Indians accept the fact that we're an independent nation and we may be similar yet are not the "same thing".
I can understand if an uncle ji or goras said something like "india pakistan aah same thing" because the goras might just be ignorant and the uncle ji's lived in a different time but I can't imagine somebody of the younger generations saying that.
whatever if you feel just tell them. may be they understand. Besides I feel north Indians and Pakistanies are alike in all respect. Its just that you guys dont like to live together. Thank goodness to that, otherwise we need to take care of another 190 million of obnoxious guys in our mist.
unfortunately it comes down to skin colour and for males physical features;
if you have a light tone of brown or even a dark tone of white (sounds like an oxymoron but it isn't) than they'll know right away that you're no where close to being a hindoooo;
some of our muhajir buds commonly get mistaken for indians as they share common ancestry/ethnicity.
pak males are more rounded in their physical feautres; for example, i've seen numerous hindoos in gym class growing up and even now playing ball with them that they have chicken/bony/skinny legs and arms. kinda malnourished.
eh forget the physical differences. i can usually tell when someone's a pakistani or indian, but sometimes i may be wrong. but i don't think any of that really matters, to be honest. it's more about nationality and who you really are with regards to the two different ideologies of the countries. even today you can see how they have gone in seperate paths over the course of 60 years.
hmm come to think of it... I think India is winning! :O

I agree with you Phatima as it has happened to me as well a few times. The way they say and mean it is what's most bothersome. It is quite obvious that they still cannot accept Pakistan as an independent state, they still think and wanna believe that Pak is a part of India.
alien… they faught against aliens and now they are fighting against their own to get more independence and fake-pinkie support all that by voting for dictatora.
