What is vulgar to you might not be the same to me. We all have our set standards and we keep raising and lowering the bar to suit our needs and interests and sometimes we adjust keeping in view the circumstances and changing times…There was a time when we would change the channel when we saw girls in mini skirts parancing around…and slowly we got used to it, as the cable subtely invaded the well guarded confines of our respective houses.
So, I was watching this movie Amar Prem…what a movie… starring Rajesh Khana and Sharmila tagore…(I didnt actually watch it.. just that ammi was, so i got a glimpse or two from time to time) . Wonderful songs and decent storyline…
Chingari koi bharkay …
Raina beeti jai/ shaam na aaai and so many more (perfecto)
Well, not that I want to compare but has someone seen Murder?? Wonderful songs the movie has…but don’t you just feel that there is so much vulgarity in the Indian movies today. If its just you alone , then you can be all unfaithful you want to be but well, with parents around ( now this is my own concern.. not hers per se) one just feels uncomfortable…sometimes the person in question can feel uneasy watching something on your own.Well, this all pops up in your mind 'cuz of the cultural affinity factor and your inability to digest the way the society is changing at such a fast pace…its not much different afterall on the other side of the border…
Fire, the movie brought to light one aspect of the society… but whats with all that frenching and endless love scenes in movies nowadays??
So, how do you guys view vulgarity and how do you feel watching such movies with parents in particular… afterall we haven’t crossed that line where all is cool and where nothing matters.I have had a chat with one of my friends and being a male he also felt the same thing…
ABHC, The Hollywood movies come with a rating and it is very easy to pick movies you can watch with family. Plus, goray french kissing is expected...Indians doing the act with heavy breathing and making a big deal out of it is a bit cheesy.
you mean to say watching gorays hump won't have any ill effect on our superfly culture, but
watching brown people french kiss might cause some serious damage ?
This whole nudity/vulgarity thing is in my opinion an attempt to keep up with hollywood. They just forgot a minor detail that comes with hollywood movies...the bloody rating!
FG what sort of ratings could bollywood use? I think most Pakistani films could be rated D for disgusting...except for the real oldies or a handful of the upcoming ones.
I remember every single time something even very slightly vulgar came on we'd change channels or look away but now I don't watch TV with my parents, just on my own and don't bother looking away, after a while it stops seeming dirty..
If it is an indian movie, I usually watch it w/ my mom and we are very selective in what we watch. If the review says there is a lot of vulgarity and love making scenes then we don't even bother renting it. Indian movies have become more and more vulgar over the years for sure. Now more attention is paid on how short the skirt is, how much of the girl's navel is showing and in full view than the story line. Even in a 'kiddie' movie like koi mil gaya, you must have noticed that preity's dresses were very very short! What was the point of that?? NONE whatsoever. Indian movies always try to titillate the audience by just showing a little and not all - and it serves no purpose in the movie's storyline.
If the remote is in my hand, which usually is… all I do is flip channels or watch BBC.food…
Ok coming back to the topic Funjee and FF again thanks for understanding the topic at hand. I haven’t watched an India movie in a long time but with cable around, one doesnt need to invest in buying a dvd or rent a movie…its there… on all indi channels they show the making, the songs and the trailors…you get to know a lot abt a particular movie and thats abt it for a person like me…Funjee, cuz of the songs I just remember the name of one movie… give me sometime and I 'll forward you the entire list…
cscraja.. ya maybe thats the reason. There must be some rating but it isnt shown on the T.V…an oldie like me doesnt need one but yeah its important for the kids…kids???
Rukhsar so true…this is no Indian bashing thread, afterall Pakistan is a huge market for Indian movies, so its natural that we will comment on
the changing trends too.
ABHC…you missed my point. The thread isn’t abt Hollywood movies…atleast we know abt those movies and we are well prepared for the spark, fuse and lock phenomenon Its in the cultural context at a particular time and for those who live with their parents. Otherwise its not difficult to get our own t.v sets…
^ aray baba itna defensive kyoon hotay ho, haan.. tsk
See, afterall we have a shared history, we share borders and we WATCH Indian movies...apni jo achee naheen, so the concern is natural....now don't bring this discriminatory crap in my thread, theek
there are countless voices and viewpoints in the world abt different issues and you being the bleeding liberal at heart should be understanding enough. I am only highlighting the concerns of 'a segment' of the population...no name games, no finger pointing...ok :)
Minerva, your name means the goddess of wisdom, no? How come you have not displayed any of those traits in the above post?
The segment of the society that find this so offensive is a bunch of morons. And the remedy is as I suggested up above.
the larger segment for which these movies are made, could care less. You equated it with vulgarity..and gratiutousness of sex and flowery language. which is not the case.
Skimpy clothes aside, Bollywood movies are still pretty repressed sexually too. You still don’t see any kissing let alone bedroom scenes. Either the audiences aren’t ready for it or the censors are very strict.
