Faisal, results come out on thursday i think. If Cong form a govt then Sonia will become
Mursalin - If the NDA fails to get 250 seats i suppose vajpayee will take the blame and resign. unless they want to forge alliances, get an extra 10 seats and form a shaky coalition govt. much better to sit in the oppositon and heckle the congress, wait for it to screw up and then get re-elected. it's like recycling.
if bjp loses it will have to face certain cold facts. no more mandir-masjid politicking and poor have to get some returns like the middle class.
I dont think if Congress gets a majority, they would project Sonia as the PM because of her Italian origins. SHe may be the leader of Congress Party, but there are rumors that Manmohan Singh may be placed as PM candidate.
Election counting starts tomorrow and results should be out tomorrow because of E-voting

YES..by tomorow we would know that which party got how many seats. But we may not still know who is gonna be PM unless BJP and its allies(NDA) gets around 250. 272 is magic number. If bjp gets above 250,Vajpayee will be PM. But if they are shot of 250 ,which is most likely now, then the person who has his stars in better shape can be PM.
Main contender being Sonia ,Manmohan Singh,Jyoti Basu,Mulayam SIngh etc.Though my personel opinion is that people will have consensous on Manmohan singh,
Every democracy is a working democracy. Unlike theocracies, democracies change with the times...new governance procedures and laws are passed to fit the times as others are repealed. for example...a democracy in 700 ad in arabia could have a law saying "interest is illegal"...but in 2002 such a law is simply put idiotic so people decide to change the law. I hope that clears up the confusion for you.
Frankly speaking, I am/was kinda hoping Atal remains. He is now a known entity. Any new guy comes in, we (i.e. Pakistanis) don't know how he will turn out to be vis-a-vis relations with Pakistan.
Atal will remain, but my consolation is that if he doesn;t then MM singh is the best man for the job. Pakistan will take a back seat to further reforms in the economy. Hope the congress idiots have the balls to go through with the agenda...

Though I will laso like to see Manmohan SIngh as PM but problem is will he be able to manage a coalition. I somehow feel uncomfortable with the Idea of PM in a democracy who doesnt have mass support.Guy cannot even win his MP seat .He will be taken for a ride by those seasoned politicians.Remember I K Gujral.
It's just gone past 8.00am local time in India, and the counting of the votes is now underway. Due to the new impressive e-voting system that was used, we should know the overall results in just a few hours and early trends in an hour or so.

Congress sweeps Haryana
BJP’s decision to snap ties with Chautala is costing it dear. Congress is leading all the seats in the state.

I wish Congress had got clear majority. I dont like coalition governments that results based on horse trading and carrot dangling (in the form of ministerial berths for on-the-fence candidates). This allows even small time regional leaders like Laloo and Surjeet to play king-makers. Also, it is usual in these situations that an innocuous (rather than charismatic) leader like Manmohan Singh would be the consensus choice for PM.
While I am delighted to see Vajpayee go ( the man can't walk or talk), I am not too happy with the results. Whichever combination forms the government, I dont see the Prime Minister taking tough decision esp. with respect to the economy and the Govt lasting for too long.
So the bottom line is this result is not good for India, not good for India-Pak long-term CBMs, not good for potential foreign investors and very bad news for the Indian stock market.
