India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world...

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world...

It is simply a space race for India. I am all for the space program and it certainly has brought a sense of national pride and inspiration for young kids there. But I don’t get how studying methane over mars atmosphere would help an average joe in india in the next 100 years. On a global level, India’s space program is pretty cheap but for people living there locally, the amount is ridiculous and they have a right to be pissed. Sure, there would be jobs created and investors will come in etc. but still I could name thousands of other things that India could have done with the same money which would have created more jobs, brought more money along with improving the way of life of people there.

But the sad truth is that even if they didn’t spend money on the space program, they still wouldn’t have spend money on women and girl’s issues, medical care, safe drinking water etc. Problem is with the India’s priorities and it is in the wrong place.

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world...

Good step. I think India should spend more money on these type of scientific researches.

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world...

That's the entire point! You can't tell someone how to spend their money. I still think it's for a good cause. If we all put our heads and money together, we could eliminate world hunger. What are we doing then? We all have priorities, if India's got it wrong so do we! India isn't the only country responsible for eradicating poverty and hunger along with other social issues. It's all of our responsibility towards humanity. I would rather have India spend money on programs like these than on the lame Bollywood movies they keep churning out but even then I am no one to make that comment. Unless I have fulfilled my own responsibility towards humanity, I have no right to judge.

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world...

How dare you call Bollywood movies lame, Theory? Why do you hate Indians?

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world...

I have a good analogy for that.. watching a Bollywood movie is like being tied up and getting tickled all over AND I am very ticklish. Also, I don't like being tickled.

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world...

What are you talking about? India as a country should look after its citizens. If its not India's job to eradicate poverty and hunger in their country then whose job is it? Of course as human beings all country must participate and NGOs, aids etc. are being given to India in such regard. Does that mean India should stop paying attention to these matters because its 'humanity's job and start building mars rocket? No body said the money should be spent on bollywood movies but hospitals, vaccines, research institutes, transport etc. would do a lot more benefit to the local people there. And no right to judge? what? May be me and you can't judge India coz we are not living there and so we shouldn't be talking about it anyway but thats naive. But since we are having this conversation, people have the right to judge the policies, spending, budget a government makes because eventually its the people's money they are spending, not their money. If people stop judging their government and their policies, how would they bring about a change?

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world…

I have to disagree with you about the space race part. It is not simply about the space race. Indian media would like to hype it up that way, but there is real value for Indians in this. Let me see if I can find you some links about what they are planning to do with the success they just had. Check this and this

If you frame the debate that way, then it is tactical vs. strategic. And it is a call policy makers all the time. For Indians, strategic made more sense. Sure they can re-purpose this money to poverty alleviation, sanitation, medical care etc., but the so called bang for the buck for them is in investing where they can make the most money. They are playing to their strength and that strength is science and technology.

Frankly, I think, this whole argument against investing money in research is from the IMF and the world bank. Sometimes I wonder, if the developed countries use IMF and World Bank as tools to keep developing countries poor and dependent by not letting them develop long-term solutions for their problems.

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world…

There is nothing in my post(s) that is against learning science.

The fact that you resorted to make a connection between the molvie and my post simple means you are no different than Bill Maher against whom you started the thread earlier.

False equivalency is not a sign of wisdom.

Basically you are saying that there is displacement of priorities.

So did I. Spending money on these kind of projects also does not help people who need something as essential as food and water.

it is obvious that you are resorting to long cut and paste as well as talking about Pakistan to hide your embarrassment.

Stick to India or so called scientific discussion like this.

You did not get the message from the bold part of my earlier post.

You are following whatever these scientists feed you without using your own brain.

All you are supporting is some selfish scientists who have fooled governments to spend moneys on their orgasmic dreams.

Speaking of China and India as well as other countries who forced their citizens to adapt measures to stop procreating beyond one or two offsprings for the fear of hunger tells a lot.

The statistics of lowering hunger is also attached to killing infants (abortion) or mass sterilization and scaring people by using laws to have children as many as they would wish or could afford.

Should the money and resources be spent on these kind of utterly wrong endeavors or letting married couple (human being) decide how many children they want to have?

Hope you got the point.

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world...

If ignorance is a bliss, you must be ecstatic!

The information obtained from a telescope will be X times light years old. Get it?

From finding signature of life from far away planets so what? Bhuttay Bhoonogay kia agar kuch mil gaya wahan?

The poor management does include wasting money on these kind of so called scientific projects.

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world…

The beauty of Science is the immediate payoff is not obvious.

Re the IMF I heard the interest rates charged to 3rd world countries is exhorbitant.

The beauty of religion also is that the immediate payoff is not obvious.

LOL @ get it. :) so masoom..

really tiny frog in really tiny well.

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world...

You're much prettier when you don't talk

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world…

Nothing substantial as usual.

Still pretty talk or when quiet. :snooty:

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world…

substantial like diwana’s bhuna bhutta stand on lalukhet #2](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=2) on the other planet light years away?

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world...

Is it fair to conclude that both scientific endeavors and (for some) religious investments have potential for long term returns?

Group hug?

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world…

:smack:

Diwana, the problem with you is either you are not trying to update yourself or you are blindly against anything India is involved in.

Re: India to assist in building the largest Telescope in the world…

Blindly?

You did not answer my question.

Please tell this good news that India is helping others find someday, the signature of life in far away planets,.. to this child and almost 3000 others who die everyday in India for lack of nourishment.

Read this article also…just one example…of priorities being displaced.

it has also catapulted the country onto the world stage, boosting its claim for a bigger role on forums such as the U.N. Security Council. This month, it moved closer to buying new fighter jets worth a whopping $15 billion.
