Bhubaneswar: India on Tuesday successfully tested the nuclear capable Agni-II missile from a defence base in Orissa, official sources said.
The surface-to-surface missile with a range of over 2,000 km was test fired from the Wheeler’s Island near Dhamara in the district of Bhadrak, some 150 km from Bhubaneswar at 1006 hrs IST.
“It was a user trial,” the sources said, adding that the aim of the test was to give the Army confidence to fire the missile on its own.
The Agni II missile, which is a part of India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, is 20 metres long.
Weighing 16 tonnes, the missile can carry a payload of around 1,000 kg and its range can also be increased to 3,000 km by reducing the pay load.
“It can be fired from both rail and road mobile launchers. It takes only 15 minutes for the missile to be readied for firing,” the sources said, adding that the Agni II-version of the Agni series of missiles was first test fired in 1999 from the same location.
^ This was a trial by the users (Army) vs. a test fire by the DRDO. Now its really operational :p
So what? The only cost-effective use of these missiles is with the nukes. And do you really think any single of these missiles is going to be used??? And if it is used, there will no celebration on either side of the border.

so it means the Agni III claims last year were premature, going by that 10 year development cycle schedule Agni III should be ready in 2017 :P

Agni II has been tested by the users, and they are comfortable they can use it. Agni III has only been tested by the developers - user testing will also take place. Both of these missiles are operational.
I agree with prince of Lahore, nobody wants any of these weapons to ever be used by anyone. Lets hope they will never be more than something like ancestral swords polished and hanging on the walls.
However, jubilation over deploying the Agni II missile is curious, like reading an old newspaper or watching a black and white movie, eating cold food or drinking stale beer. Hmm .... most missiles need years of perfection and testing (at least for us kaffirs). This means even a successful testing does not mean no further testing is required. I would not be surprised if the same missile is tested again in a few months. It could be that the multiple re-entry system is being tested this time. It could be some other system being tested next.
Of course, in pakistan 1 testing is enough to declare a missile usable. After all everyone knows they are already dependable/original systems.... ;)

Agni III is not working out, they had already abandoned AGni IV, and now AGni V is what seems to be the prime objective. To make up for the news item says that AGni II can increase its range with a lighter payload. If its a lighter payload, then it cant be nuclear capable :) so the range is still 2k km.
For the mean time we have missiles that have a larger range & are operational.

yeah, we bought it/traded it, or w/e and it works.
you guys are trying to make more parts of it, and its not working.
In the long run local manufacturing is more desirable, but it takes time. But even India does not have a 100 percent local manufacturing, 25-20 percent of the parts are imported.
