The right-wing Hindu government in the tourist state of Rajasthan has accused India’s central government of suggesting that “illegal Bangladeshi migrants” should be put in a “transit camp like Guantanamo Bay”.

With this, the issue of Bangladeshi migrants in the north Indian state has snowballed into a major controversy.

Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje, who participated in a Tuesday TV talk show, endorsed the interviewer’s suggestion that “rounding up” illegal migrants would amount to a Guantanamo Bay-type situation.

“They wrote to us saying ‘round them (Bangladeshis) up and put them in transit camps and feed them’,” she said.

But Indian Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who has continuously been accused of being soft on terror, hit back saying that the chief minister was lying and her statement only exposed her ‘weakness’ in tackling terrorism.

“Perhaps she (Raje) is shaken after the recent blasts in Jaipur and is saying anything that is not true. She should have avoided it (making the statement). She has just exposed her weakness,” Patil said.

But things took a different turn on Tuesday. As Rajasthan’s home minister Gulab Chand Kataria showed the media a copy of the letter that the Indian central government sent to the Rajasthan government, it was clear that the war-of-words over so-called illegal Bangladeshi migrants have taken a different turn.

The Rajasthan government, rocked by nine serial blasts in Jaipur, had earlier said all “illegal Bangladeshi migrants” would be deported from the state as Bangladesh based militant group Harkat-ul Jihad al Islami (HUJI) had been pointed out as the group behind the blast.

According to official figures, there are more than 50,000 Bangladeshis in various districts and about 10,000 of them live in different colonies in Jaipur.

“All district superintendents have been asked to complete surveys and send the reports to the government. If someone has proper documents, there is no question of taking any action against him or her,” said Rajasthan’s police chief AS Gill.

India has come up with a new way of dealing with its illegal immigrants. Even US is not that harsh on Latinos from Mexico or Latin America. Poor Bangladeshi’s look like in troubled waters now.

Illegal immigrants should learn to mind their own business and not start interfering in the lives of the legal citizens. It is the price one has to pay if a fellow illegal immigrant has his head in the wrong place. What else can you expect. In US the latinos are terrorised and are made to work in subhuman conditions for very low wages. It is not so in India. These guys begin to enjoy the hospitality and then take it upon themselves to make the native people to believe in their way of life !!!

Believe in their way of life? They are from Bangladesh...you know the country surrounded on three sides by India and the eastern part of Bengal? How different can thier way of life be?

India and Pakistan should warm up to the idea of helping Bangladesh house their own. India itself has a problem of poverty, so does Pakistan. Each to their own.

Who is interfering with your "way" of life?? Isn't it outrageous that your government suggests to put immigrants in prisons without conducting any trials etc. You don't even treat animals like that.

^ Well, on first place , you are rude and don't deserve much answers. Second,Immigrants are in all countries of the world, it's not anything out of blue. Thirdly, what goes on in India with INDIANS ,no body gives a rats as* ,But then your government doesn't have any right to treat all immigrant B'deshi's like prisoners, but ahh why to blame your govt , they have always been human rights abusers..... and so they can go on with their rampage , until it hits on their own face again .

Legal immigrants are fine. Illegal are not fine. If we begin to start treating these illegals as they deserve, they would stop coming here. That would save us a lot of bother.

Gauntanamo-bay-like prison is stupid idea specially for "illegal immigration". Its not like India would be dealing with 1000-10000 prisoners, I'm sure number would be somewhere in 100,000s, price would be too high. If I were in charge I would just grab them and truck-ship them to their own borders and seal the border.

As a practical matter, Guantanamo Bay like camps are not a long-term solution. Why should Indian government (or any govt, for that matter) be endlessly footing the bill of feeding and keeping countless illegals. Even US is re-thinking its prisoner-for-life strategy of Gitmo.

What Indian government should do, is to come up with a plan, where illegal aliens are rounded up and then forcibly sent back across the border from where they came from. And if we decide to be completely heartless about it, a little chitrol on the way won't hurt either to discourage folks from breaking the laws (immigration laws, i.e.)

Pretty much all countries of the world face the issue of illegal immigration... Pakistan has the issue from our western neighbors, India has it from its Eastern neighbor, US has it from its southern neighbor. Unless its an issue of natural calamity or war (where humanitarian concerns take priority), moving across borders with complete disregard for laws and immigration control should be punished. Its not like India or Pakistan are basking in economic glory and can take in un-ending lines of people from their neighboring countries, who want to make few more bucks.

Well you can not put India and Pakistan in the same categories now. India is way ahead in terms of economic growth. Besides it is not like these immigrants just landed up in Jaipur . Some of them have already been living in there since 80's and their second generation is growing up fast now. You can not throw back all these poor people for some "nationalistic" ideology back to their miseries. It is a question of human lives, not of some zealous patriotism. Even in USA those that are born of immgrants are taken care of. And you cannot equate all the immigrants to militants.
