^^ well the biggest corruption goes on in arms deal all over the world. i am sure someone is getting kickback here too.
i guess we will have to live with this fact, not that it is right.
the only good thing would be that we get ToT so even if we overpay for them , we wont be dependent on them later.

After 60+ years of independence and enjoying above 60% of budget over the years, still the defense forces are looking out-side to buy their normal toys!!! I won't buy it when they says that India lacks the human capital to build such technology or may be there are some other things which we don't know... after all, every 3/4 years, India runs to by war-planes and other military equipment from west!!!

@ hanibal: Bhai we are way way behind in cutting edge military technology. it is not about brains, it is about institution building and getting the funding together. west has perfected it, in fact there are 4-5 countries only who can build those kind of planes. america is generations ahead of any country in the world. the type of plane america is retiring today, rest of the world is still doing research to build them.
While few countries are working on their 5th gen fighters, rest of the world is still struggling to make their first jet engine.
why reinvent the wheel when you can overpay for one.
BTW it is not normal toy india is buying. its the shyt.
We never invested in our local defense industry to make it self sustainable, other countries sell it to others and make money.
we invested i space science and it is doing wonders for us. if we can go to moon then i am sure we can build anything else given the funding and infrastructure.

I feel sorry for the Indian Taxpayers, this Maha Chor Dassault Systems is the same Company that sold submarines to Pakistan and over Invoiced them by 400 million dollars!
These rip off artists got to those people at the top and gave them kickbacks!

You don't see the positive side: All those hundreds of millions of Indian citizens sleeping on footpaths and living on sewage water and competing with animals for food will sleep without any fear. The price is worth it even with kickbacks!

Well its a fact not mentality. India has started its own programme but it is years away. We are frontrunner in south asia but that isnt good enough. so lets be real.
btw those "toys" dont expire in 3/4 years. your own F 16s are 25-30 years old but still are relevant.

Hi this is interesting news indeed.
While I was always a big fan of the F16 becuase it is still the most manouverable and best pure dogfighter plane ever built I think the Typhoon is a good plane too. India would do better to avoid the Desault Rafael I dont trust that plane and the fighter/bomber classification is a bit vague as it's not a pure dogfighter like the F16 and Typhoon.
Statistically the Typhoon has better weaponry and more sophisticated missiles and defence systems but the F16 is still more manouverable and makes a tighter turn. Paksitan has a good multi role aircraft in the J17 Thunder but the F16 is more manouverable still even than the more powerfull J17.
India and Pakistan should both stop relying on foriegn weaponry really and invest more money on feeding and sheltering thier own people. If it comes to a fight I think both nations should just slug it out at the border with Infantry and basically keep the damage down as much as possible.
But nice move by India to turn down the Americans if only Pakistani army could show more backbone to the Americans instead of relying/co-operating/footstooling them.
As a Pakistani I would rather see both countries work more for peace but if guys at the top want to slug it out while people starve then so be it... My war is over.

what you said about f-16 is mostly true. it is battle tested which separates it from other untried planes.
But at the same time it is a old frame. For a country which already has it, it makes sense to add more . but for a country which is looking to buy new system for next generation i dont think f-16 are ideal.
we could have gone for limited f-18s though.

Sukhoi Su-30MKI is superior to F-16 and JF-17 Thunder. which is our flagship fighter jet.
having said that su-30 mki is of defferent class.
it would be good to compare with our new LCA (HAL)Tejas vs JF-17/F-16.
btw can someone provide details between this fighters.

India shortlisted Rafale and Typhoon for the race simply because they met most of the 630 technical attributes mentioned in the request for proposal by the ministry of defence ,while the others lacked either in performance or had limitations in terms of future upgrades.
Rafale has edge over Typhoon in tems of performance and involves an easier adaptability as it is logistically and operatinally similar to Mirage-2000.The Governemnt of France has also cleared the trasfer of technology ,including the AESA. But again AEASA is in it's developing stage.
Another thing is a saving of 1.5 Billion $ project to upgrade Mirage-2000 fleet by having Rafale in arsenal.

Again FG-16 and F-18 failed in high altitude tests.(One of the 630 requirements which these planes had to prove and tested). This is something we have to look at. During the 1999 Kargil battle,it took us days to have LSG(Laser Guided Bombs) to be fitted on our Mirage-2000 and then came the Tiger Hill assault.Pls remember that was the turning point of the `match’. We crushed the spine of the terrorists by that assault.Mirage-2000 was the only plane I.A.F had at that point of time,that was capable of striking at that high altitude.
Again I.A.F has got high altitude bases and we will have to take high altitude missions in future also. So we can not take risks anymore…
Moreover we have had so many icy juice agreements with a nation that has got a fickle attitude towards our military,Nuclear and Space programmes and we can not depend on them entirely. Since they have issued Visa to me recently,I can not mention their name and you can guess who that is.

If by battle tested you mean blowing 3rd world Countries to bits then I guess they have been battle tested.
