INDIA READY TO BOYCOTT WORLD CUP
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to take on the International Cricket Council head on. The upbeat BCCI has, in its special general body meeting on December 25, has decided to reject the newly-proposed offers by the ICC to make the Indian cricketers sign the 2003 ICC World Cup contracts.
There was a teleconference this afternoon between the ICC and the members of all the cricket Boards round the world in which the ICC made its new proposals public. The ICC agreed to reduce the 30-day period where cricketers can’t endorse their individual sponsors conflicting with the World Cup sponsors to just five days, and for the finalists of the event, it will be 20 days. Jagmohan Dalmiya, the BCCI president, attended the teleconference from Kolkata.
Regarding the image rights, the ICC has also agreed to come down from its earlier demands. However, the BCCI says it is not legally bound to accept the terms and conditions set by the ICC. The BCCI has cited the example of Tony Greig, John Snow and Mike Proctor who in 1977 took the cricket’s parent body, to court.
In its ruling, the London court had said that the contracts signed first will be considered valid, and no individual or institution can force someone to sign any contract without one’s agreement.
The second point that the BCCI is going to raise is: regarding the image clause, what about the period of 30 days prior to the tournament? The ambush marketing has already started in some cases and it will be difficult for the BCCI to stop its players from appearing in commericals before the event.
Said a top BCCI source, “We have decided to reject the ICC proposals. And we dare them – have a cricket World Cup without India’s participation and make it a success.” When asked if the players also have been informed about the development, he said, “Of course. We are doing this for the players only. They are also ready to forsake the World Cup for their rights. Let them have it without India. We are ready.”
The ball, as the BCCI official put it, “is in the ICC’s court now.”
