**India offers Pak 5,000MW electricity
** By Muhammad Saleh Zaafir
Seoul: India has formally offered to provide Pakistan with 5,000 megawatt electricity to fulfill its energy requirements on an urgent basis regularly which could be transmitted through Punjab without much delay.
The offer was made by Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in a brief chat he had with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani during their interaction at the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) here in the capital city of South Korea.
According to sources, Indian Prime Minister Singh took a keen interest in the economic difficulties of Pakistan and Prime Minister Gilani thanked him for the offer. Gilani assured his Indian counterpart that Islamabad would reply to New Delhi through proper channels soon.
Are the power grids even connected? I guess they must be if they are thinking about this option.
mo293, electricity generation and power blackouts can be a regional affair sometimes. IF you have an electrical background you would better understand why Punjab can provide Pakistan with a small amount of electricity under certain conditions.. when they can't really do anything about a power blackout that happens another time in another Indian state.

Don't they say Charity starts at home, How is it possible that you have severe power shortages across India and you are offering us 5KMW... Simply does not add up or is there something that we don't know, please enlighten us...

It's about distance from generating source and timing of generation vs timing of max need. I'm assuming that India is thinking about draining overproduced electricity (which happens all the time, and this cannot be stored and saved for later when there is a shortage). North American provinces and states do this all the time with neighboring provinces and states, even though they still have outages every now and then.
If you're not an electrical/power engineer, it's tough to explain and I lack the motivation to put in the time!
Also note that a LOT of outages in India happen due to equipment failures, inefficient system design and safety violations.....besides just shortage.

There is no need to explain, it all sums up "Indian logic" And yes, LOTS of shortages regardless of what ever reason are still shortages...
I strongly suggest you do some research on Indian power crises, Here is just one excerpt from one of the India source..
"India currently suffers from a major shortage of electricity generation capacity"

Your conern shouldn't be their shortage, it should be yours!
I thought we would be discussing if we should resolve our circular debt issue and enable IPPs to run at their full capacities or buy electricity from India.

Oh, thanks you so much, problem solved... Since you started this thread what to you think are the motives for one bhooka to offer another his piece of bread?

Cool down buddy. If a bhooka offers his piece of bread to you, how does it hurt you? You should be reacting gracefully to him for the offer instead of being so cynical.
By the way, you are still not touching the point that I wanted to discuss in this thread :)
The problem in Pakistan with power is not a shortage of production but that nobody is willing to pay for electricity. Unless India is willing to offer these MWatts for free, it is not going to solve any problem.

I guess you still missed the whole point, never mind just continue... Its fun anyway and this whole dance is gona fade away its usual death.....
It's corruption plus about 40 percent of our generation is through oil which we cant afford, I am sure the Indians will also charge us a hefty amount for the electricity. If we are unable to pay them for the electricity that would be more embarrassing for us.
At the moment we are producing electricity using the following commodities:
Oil 39%
Gas 29%
Hydel 29%
Nuclear 3%
Oil we can't afford (circular debt), gas shortage and reduction in capacity of hydel reserves (especially during the winter). The whole energy sector needs to be revamped but nothing of that sort in the offing.
There is no need to wage your e-jihad on me buddy.
Outages caused by other reasons have no impact here. And you were talking about outages.
Of course there are shortages in India.
I won't bother trying to explain the technical aspect to you anymore as you are motivated by your jihad more than having a civil conversatio.
So go on... diss India for wanting to help. Them crazy hindoos with small hearts.
Please spare us backwards jihadis & terrorist the agony and put your house in order instead of usual bravado shavado... I guess logic must be in short supply in your paradise, Yes please send 5000MW but we backwards jihadis & terrorist don't pay bills we never have.... Don't worry soon we backwards jihadis & terrorist will be exporting couple KMW to A-Stan too.... Happy now!!. LOL.....

Pakistan’s total identified hydel generation capacity is 46,000 MW - One of the best solution..

Interesting to note you dont want to accept this offer. I assume you will be the first volunteer to give up your electricity use.
Someone brought up a valid point - is India giving this free of charge or is India going to charge for the electricity. If the latter, the deal still makes sense for both the countries if there is overgeneration in Indian side of Punjab. So that electricity will cost less - or generation has to be curtailed. So makes good sense to sell to Pakistan at low rate. Win-win for both sides - 21st century hopefully will be focused on solutions rather than mud slinging. Cheers!
