According to the US State Department, the Pashtuns are 40%. As has been said, there has been no census in Afghanistan ever. So the figures are all estimates. But Afghanistan is physically and culturally divided by the Hindu Kush mountains. Groups to the North like the Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek and Turkmen have links with central asia. While south of these mountains, we have Pashtuns, Baluch, Nuristanis and Gujjars, as well as smaller groups like the Paracha and Burki with links to South Asia.

I say we should ditch the Pashtun centric policy, and reach out to all groups.

Afghanistan - Ethnic Groups

US State Dept is hardly an unbiased source. With the Durand line being a soft border, it’s not exactly accurate to base any estimates. Reagrdless, lets talk about the real power in Afghanistan, you and I both know the answer.

As for the change in policy: I REPEAT how do you propose accomplishing that when every group from the Tajiks to the Baluchis hate you?
